A Sarukuma writer visits and reports on “Hisanagaya,” a charming cafe located in Kawayo, Minamiaso Village, Aso District. We’ve also gathered family-friendly tips, access information, and opening hours.

Introducing Hisanagaya

Hello, this is Binako, a writer for [Sarukuma].
I’ve been sitting on this article for so long that it has practically fermented into something trendy, so I figured it was finally time to share it!

Today I’m introducing a delightful spot in Kawayo, Minamiaso Village, Aso District:
[Hisanagaya] a cozy cafe inside Choyo Station.

Located inside Choyo Station, Hisanagaya is famous for its signature “shihon” chiffon cakes β€” the name is a clever Japanese play on words meaning “capital of happiness.”

[Himitsu Kichi Gon] A Hero-Themed Cafe Inside the Station That Both Adults and Kids Will Love (Ichinoseki, Minamiaso Village, Aso District)

The previously featured “Himitsu Kichi Gon” cafe is right next door, so you can easily visit both.

Inside, you’ll find freshly harvested local vegetables and homemade shiso (perilla) juice for sale.
My mother bought a bottle of the shiso juice and apparently loved it so much that she finished it in no time.
Our “let’s share it together” promise vanished along with that delicious drink…

Train enthusiasts won’t want to miss the original Minami Aso Railway can badges.
A bargain at just Β₯100 each!
The pile of empty capsules next to the gachapon machine speaks volumes about how passionate fans are about completing the collection.

And check out this charmingly handmade game!
My little one made a beeline for it the moment we arrived.
I joined in too, and we had a blast flicking marbles together β€” pure parent-child fun.

There are also picture books available, so you can read to little ones while you wait.
Honestly, what more could you ask for? It’s wonderful!
As for me, I’ve always had a soft spot for “Karasu no Panya-san” (The Crow’s Bakery) β€” a beloved Japanese children’s classic.

Here’s the table seating area.
It’s wonderfully open and airy, where you can feel the gentle breeze across the Aso countryside.

Hisanagaya’s Recommended Menu

Here’s the menu.
Hisanagaya’s chiffon cakes are made without any additives or preservatives.
They’re gentle on the body and feature seasonal Kumamoto ingredients β€” truly cakes that bring happiness.

Water is self-service.
The ice-cold water is so refreshing you’ll want to gulp it down in one go!

This time, I ordered the Cake and Drink Set (Β₯1,000).
On the left is the Premium Coffee, and on the right is the “Stationmaster’s Drink.”
The creative menu names are simply irresistible β€” I just had to try them!

This is the Matcha “Shihon” Cake.
The colorful fruit topping is absolutely adorable β€” it brought out my inner girlishness in an instant.

The fragrant matcha pairs beautifully with the fluffy chiffon cake for an incredible flavor combination.
Light and not too sweet, it almost feels like you’re drinking it rather than eating it.

And here’s the “Heart of Japan” (Plum) flavor.
The pretty pink presentation is simply lovely.

The gentle tartness of the ume (Japanese plum) is wonderfully addictive.
The smooth accompanying cream is also delicious β€” every bite is a delight.

Outside, there’s a ring toss game, and Binako Jr. played it endlessly.
With fun toys scattered throughout the space, both kids and parents can have a wonderful time together.

While we relaxed, a JR train passed by β€” and it turned out to be the special One Piece-themed train!
The front was designed like the Thousand Sunny ship, with One Piece characters painted along the sides.
It was so exciting that the inner child in me came right out!

Hisanagaya is the kind of place where you can savor luxurious moments again and again.

Whether with family, friends, or solo β€”
come enjoy a relaxing time at this lovely station cafe in the heart of Aso. Highly recommended! ^^
