Welcome to Okadake Park
Hi everyone, it’s Gussan from the Sarukuma team!
Today I want to introduce you to Okadake Park, tucked away in Matsubase-machi, Uki City.
It’s honestly one of my favorite parks in Kumamoto, so let me show you why.
Look for this sign β then follow the winding road up the mountain!
The photo doesn’t quite capture it, but next to the sports ground there’s a generous parking lot with space for around 50 cars,
and there’s another parking area a short distance away as well.
The view from up here is gorgeous, so you can soak in the scenery before you even start playing.
The restrooms by the parking lot β clean and tidy!
There’s a vending machine in the parking lot. Heads up: there are no vending machines down at the playground itself, so I strongly recommend grabbing your drinks here before heading down!
What Makes Okadake Park Special
From this stairway in the parking lot, you head down toward the famous roller slide. You can already see the playground sprawled out below!
Whatever you do, do not shout “Yahoo! Here we gooo!” and launch yourself down the slide.
Trust me β your feet will slip on the rollers, you’ll land on your bum, and you’ll continue your descent in the most undignified pose imaginable (yes, this is a true storyβ¦).
If the slide isn’t your thing, no worries β there’s a staircase that takes you down to the lower playground on foot.
A cheery sunflower-shaped table β perfect against the blue sky! The building in the back is the playground-side restroom.
A peaceful, wide-open vibe β absolutely ideal for a picnic βͺ
Because the park is set in the mountains, kids can also go on little exploration adventures!
Hunting for sticks, picking up interesting stones, getting messy in nature β so many children love this kind of free play, right?
Here’s the main play area. Equipment is sprinkled throughout the natural landscape, blending right into the trees and slopes.
There’s even a big multi-feature playset.
My son trying to escape from the spider-web climber.
My 3-year-old daughter absolutely fell in love with this one β she went on it again and again!
A see-saw shaped like a piece of farm equipment β quirky and fun.
A slide that looks just like a giant croissant!?
A Tarzan-style zip line, too!
Plus rope-climbing structures, which is why we saw lots of older elementary-aged kids enjoying themselves here.
My 5-year-old son got stuck up high and had to be rescued by Dad. Classic.
Throughout the shady, tree-covered park you’ll find tables and chairs scattered all over the place β really convenient for a break.
In spring, this would be a beautiful spot for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) too βͺβͺ
Between the playground equipment and the natural setting, it’s a wonderful place to play β but after rain, the ground gets muddy, so it’s smart to bring a spare pair of shoes for the kids.
The walk from the parking lot down to the playground is also fairly long, so it can be a workout if you’re pushing a stroller or carrying a baby. That said, Okadake Park is a fantastic place to let kids run wild in nature, so do give it a visit when you’re exploring Kumamoto!
