Welcome to Tsukiji Shijukudai Park
Hello, travelers!
This is Igaguri 🌰, your Sarukuma guide to hidden gems around Kumamoto.
Today I’m taking you to a charming neighborhood park in Tsukiji, Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture — Tsukiji Shijukudai Park (築地四十九台公園).

Cherry blossom trees everywhere! 🌸
On your left you’ll find the open sports ground, and on your right is the playground area.

There’s plenty of parking available — perfect if you’re driving in.

You’ll spot a vending machine for cold drinks and snacks…

…clean public restrooms…

…and even a hand-washing station!

The grounds also have soccer goals set up, so feel free to bring a ball ⚽
Now, let’s take a look at the playground equipment 👇
Top Highlights of Tsukiji Shijukudai Park

A spinning chair-style merry-go-round — pretty rare!
Kids of a certain age love pushing it instead of sitting on it.

Classic swings…

…and a seesaw.
It’s a bit of a vintage one, and the local boys were laughing their heads off shouting “Ouch — right there!! lol” while bouncing away on it.

There are horizontal bars and a sandbox, watched over from both sides by a row of friendly animal statues.

Elephant 🐘
Camel 🐫

Lion 🦁
Bear 🐻
Panda 🐼
(The lion’s eyes are a little intense, to be honest!)

A simple slide…

…and some kind of climbing structure!
“Mom, you come in too!” my kid called — but squeezing through the round and square holes turned out to be tougher than I thought! 😅

Wait — kids actually climb all the way up this?!

There are plenty of benches scattered around for parents to sit and relax!

Oh look — a flower crown made from white clover! Such a nostalgic little find ☺

Right next door is Shijukuike Shrine (四十九池神社), which gives the whole area a peaceful, atmospheric feel ☆
Despite the name (literally “49 ponds”), the shrine isn’t named after 49 actual ponds. Local legend tells of 49 samurai or women who appeared at — or threw themselves into — a pond here, and that’s where the name comes from.
Every year on October 15th, the shrine holds its grand autumn festival, complete with fireworks! 🎆
Even some Tamana locals don’t know this one — a real hidden seasonal highlight.
Personally, this is one of my top two favorite parks in Tamana City!
The other is Yamashita Park in Taimei, which I’ve covered before.
If you’re spending a day exploring Tamana with kids, I highly recommend visiting both! (^^)/
