Welcome to Yamashita Park

Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Igaguri 🌰, your friendly writer here at Saru Kuma.

Today I’m taking you off the beaten path to a charming neighborhood park tucked away in Yamashita, Taimei-cho, Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture β€” the lovely “Yamashita Park” (ε±±δΈ‹ε…¬εœ’).

You’ll find this little gem near the Tamana City Taimei Branch Office and the much-loved Ida Confectionery shop β€” easy to spot once you’re in the area!

A cheerful little squirrel greets you at the entrance!

And a smiling (and rather surprised-looking!) little mushroom character welcomes visitors too. So adorable!

The parking area fits about 5 cars β€” plenty for a quiet park like this one.

And yes β€” there are restrooms on site too! Always a relief when traveling with little ones.

Why Yamashita Park Is Worth a Visit

Wow β€” palm trees?! Suddenly it feels like a tropical resort right in the middle of Kumamoto! 🌴

The play equipment looks fairly new and well-maintained β€” always a plus!

Classic swings to enjoy…

And there’s even a Tarzan rope (zip-line) β€” kids absolutely love this one! πŸŽ‰

That said, it was a bit tricky for my 3-year-old. The grip handle and seat are on the smaller side, so it’s better suited to slightly older kids.

And here’s the real surprise β€” there’s even a basketball hoop!

That’s a huge plus!
It’s pretty rare to find one in a neighborhood park like this β€” perfect for casual hoops with the family.

You could easily get a mini basketball game going here β€” there’s plenty of open space! πŸ€

There’s also lots of relaxing space to take a break.
With summer on the way, those shaded benches will be a lifesaver!

Cool stone tables and chairs too! Are those… mushroom-shaped? So cute! πŸ’›

For some reason, my little one absolutely insisted on a pretzel for the snack break.
…and after just one bite, declared they didn’t like it. Ah, the joys of parenting little ones!

Sticky hands? No problem β€” there’s a hand-washing station right here.

The bouncy turtle ride was a huge favorite β€” boing, boing, boing!

Climbing on the little play table in the sandbox β€” not exactly its intended use, but kids will be kids!

The sand here is soft, fine, and beautifully clean β€” perfect for sandcastle building. (^^)/

Yamashita Park is a true hidden gem β€” known to locals but well off the typical tourist trail.
This is one of Igaguri’s favorite parks in Tamana, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do! β˜†
