Introducing Maruhachi Bagel Works

Hello travelers! This is Asukarando, writer for SaruKuma.

Today I’m excited to introduce a wonderful little bakery tucked away in Takahira, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City
Maruhachi Bagel Works.

The shop sits modestly at the back of a parking lot, so it’s easy to miss at first glance!
I stumbled upon Maruhachi Bagel Works completely by chance, and I’m so glad I did (*^^*)

The storefront has a stylish, calm color palette with a chic, sophisticated atmosphere.

The interior isn’t huge, but the sheer variety of bagels on display is astonishing!

And for someone as indecisive as me, all these tempting bagels make choosing nearly impossible (>_<)

Onion Cheese — 230 yen
This is the shop’s #1 recommended bagel, so of course it had to come home with me (*^^*)

Garlic Pretzel — 270 yen
A bagel that’s also a pretzel?? You really can’t imagine the taste until you try it (^o^)/

Coconut Chocolate — 250 yen

Maruhachi Bagel Works Recommended Menu

Out of all the amazing bagels available, here’s what I picked up (*^^*)

Plain — 190 yen
To truly experience a bagel’s pure essence, you’ve got to start with the plain!

The texture is wonderfully chewy (mochi-mochi!), and the more you chew, the more the natural sweetness develops!
My 1-year-old happily munched away, declaring it delicious (*^^*)

Pumpkin Nut Cheese — 270 yen

Wow—it’s packed with so many delicious things!
The black pepper sprinkled on top adds a delightful little kick with every bite, making it incredibly appetizing. I bet this would be a hit with men, too (^_^)v

Onion Cheese — 230 yen
And here’s the shop’s official #1 recommended bagel!

Onion and cheese tucked right inside the bagel!
This one is so satisfying and flavorful it could easily double as a full meal \(^-^)/

Chestnut × Chocolate — 290 yen

Loaded with generous chunks of chocolate and chestnut—a sweet bagel that brings pure happiness in every bite (*^^*)

The chocolate has a slightly bitter edge, but the natural sweetness of the chestnut balances it perfectly. I never realized chestnut and chocolate could be such an incredible pairing! (*^^*)

The shop uses homegrown vegetables and fruits, so there are many seasonal limited-edition bagels. The chestnut variety, sadly, you’ll have to wait until next year to try again (^o^)/

【How to Enjoy Your Bagel】
Microwave: 20–30 seconds
Toaster oven: 2–3 minutes (until golden brown)

I’ll definitely try this next time!!

And there are still SO many more bagel varieties to try!!
I’m already agonizing over what to get next time… (>_<)

I visited with my child, and when they started touching the windows, I said, “Hey, you’ll get them dirty!” The owner immediately reassured me with the kindest words: “It’s okay! We can just wipe them clean!” (*^^*)

Then when my little one peeled off a sign, I scolded, “No, no!” But again, the owner gently smiled and said, “It’s fine, we can put it back up!” (*^^*)

Shopping with kids always makes me worry about disturbing other customers, but the owner’s incredibly warm, understanding response made me feel so welcome. I came in for bagels, but I felt like I could’ve stayed and chatted about parenting for hours (*^^*)

The owner has such a lovely, welcoming presence—definitely bring your family along when you visit! (*^^*)
