The same location is now home to Tatomiya Suizenji.

Introducing BAKE CAFE SUN.

Hello travelers! This is Aikero, writer for Sarukuma — your guide to the best spots in Kumamoto.

Today I’m introducing a charming cafe located in Oe, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
BAKE CAFE SUN.This is a hugely popular cafe that many locals know and love!
It’s actually a sister shop to SUN DONUTS, which we featured on Sarukuma recently.

[CLOSED] SUN DONUTS in Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District — Right next to YouMe Town Hikarinomori! Brand-new chewy texture and donuts made with parental love for kids

Have you tried it yet?
My daughter loves the donuts so much she once told me, “They’re so yummy I want to eat 100 of them — please buy more!”
But Hikarinomori is a bit far from our home…

So we headed to the Oe location in central Kumamoto City, which I hadn’t yet had the chance to visit. The shop sits along Kenritsu Gekijo Dori (Prefectural Theater Street), making it easy to find even on your first visit.
It’s near the Kumamoto City Library, with the Kumamoto Prefectural Theater just a little further down the road.

Good news for drivers — there’s parking!
Four spaces right next to the shop.
And two more spaces around the back.
The sign reads “Miss Fruit Parlor” — that was the previous tenant — but feel free to park there! The interior is undeniably stylish — anyone who walks in will say “Wow, so chic!”
The artful use of dried flowers and small decor pieces is something I’d love to copy for my own home…

And the soft, natural light streaming through the windows creates the perfect ambiance.Vintage-style shelves display teas and other items that would make wonderful souvenirs to take home.
There’s both counter seating and table seating.
I couldn’t snap photos because other guests were dining, but there are also three additional tables by the window.
For those who love taking photos, the window seats are highly recommended thanks to that gorgeous natural light! There are even children’s chairs available — a lovely touch for families traveling with little ones.I arrived around 10:30 a.m., and already several donuts had sold out!

BAKE CAFE SUN. — Recommended Menu Items

This time, I visited with my two kids and grandpa — a party of four!
More people means more menu items to share with you all.I ordered the Shrimp & Avocado Sandwich.

It had serious heft to it!
You can feel the soft, pillowy bread the moment you pick it up.
The rich, creamy avocado is just the right texture, melting in your mouth like butter.I couldn’t quite identify the spice, but it gave the creamy avocado a perfect kick of flavor.
The shrimp is plump, juicy, and generously sized — a real standout.
The homemade campagne bread brings a toasty aroma and fluffy texture that ties everything together — absolutely delicious!
My son had the Brown Sugar Kinako (soybean flour) Donut.
As you can see, he happily munched away with kinako powder all over his face!“I’ll eat 100 of them… but two for now!” said my daughter, savoring the Simple Sugar Donut.
She loves the chewy texture and gentle sweetness.

After her first one, when she started to slow down, grandpa teased: “You’ve got 98 more to go, right?” Ha!
Well, 100 is impossible, but I’m so glad we found donuts so good they make her dream of eating 100.We also ordered the Basque Cheesecake.
The cake is light and incredibly smooth, almost melting on the tongue.
It’s not too heavy, so it was the perfect finish even after the sandwich. The homemade Ginger Ale had a wonderful spicy kick from real ginger.
Squeeze in the lemon for a refreshing burst of flavor — so good! The original SUN DONUTS in Kikuyo Town is so popular that it often sells out by the early afternoon.
If Kikuyo is too far for you, or if you’d like a relaxed sit-down experience, BAKE CAFE SUN. is the perfect alternative.
It’s just as popular — and the sandwiches are absolutely fantastic, so be sure to give them a try!
