A Sarukuma writer visits “Hakata Toyokaratei Kumamoto Kengun,” a Japanese fried chicken (karaage) takeout specialty shop in Kengun, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City. Prices start from just 330 yen. We also cover family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Ayu-Mama, a writer for “Sarukuma.”

Today I’m excited to introduce you to a hidden local gem in Kengun, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City:
Hakata Toyokaratei Kengun Branch.
This is a specialty takeout shop dedicated entirely to karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken).

The brand is originally based in Fukuoka, and in Kumamoto there are three locations: the Kengun branch, the Taijima branch, and the Komine branch.
The Kengun branch was actually the very first one to open in Kumamoto.

A 100% takeout shop fits perfectly with today’s grab-and-go lifestyle, doesn’t it?
The shop is located along Jieitai-dori (Self-Defense Force Avenue).
You can’t miss the bold red storefront โ€” it really stands out.
There’s also a sign right on the sidewalk to guide you in.
There’s also parking for two cars right in front of the store.
They’re open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, so they keep the fryer going late into the evening.
If you’re a traveler returning to your hotel after a long day of sightseeing โ€” or simply too tired to think about dinner โ€” this place is a lifesaver!

The first thing that catches your eye is this:
A bright banner advertising bento boxed lunches for just 330 yen!

A full karaage bento for only 330 yen โ€” is that even real?!
It’s so cheap you might actually worry the shop is losing money.

But hey, an unbeatable price is always a happy surprise!
It’s a budget traveler’s dream and a family’s best friend.
There are several other bento options too โ€” even the loaded “Mega Mix Bento” is just 595 yen!
The prices are honestly jaw-dropping. (Don’t worry, my eyes popped back into place just fine. Lol.)

Recommended Menu

Of course, our top recommendation has to be this:

The ‘Genkotsu Karaage’ (literally “fist-sized fried chicken”)!
The wall outside even displays the shop’s three commitments to flavor!

You can really feel their passion and dedication to perfecting karaage!

There are two flavors to choose from โ€” the classic ‘Karaage’ and the sweet-savory ‘Teri-Mayo’ โ€” and amazingly, you can order by the piece!
Being able to order by the piece instead of by weight is such a thoughtful touch!

When you buy by weight, the count never quite matches the number of family members, and someone always ends up fighting over the last piece. (Or is that just my house?)

Ordering by the piece avoids that issue entirely, and you can even buy small portions โ€” perfect if you’re traveling solo or just want a quick snack!

Of course, I had to try both flavors this time.
They threw in a free plastic carry bag and even chopsticks!

First up, the classic ‘Karaage’.
Look at that perfectly round shape!
It’s true to its “genkotsu” (fist) name โ€” these karaage pieces are huge and beautifully round.
The recipe doesn’t use any garlic, but the seasoning is wonderfully bold โ€” crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside!
It pairs perfectly with both an icy beer and a bowl of steamed white rice.
And because it’s garlic-free, it’s a great choice for women, children, and anyone worried about garlic breath while sightseeing!

Next up, the ‘Teri-Mayo’ (teriyaki-mayo flavor).
This combo is an absolute can’t-miss!!
There’s no way teriyaki sauce and mayo on fried chicken could be anything but delicious!

And the verdict… yep, it absolutely lived up to expectations!
The sweet-savory teriyaki sauce blends beautifully with the creamy mayo over the crispy karaage.
Honestly, a hungry teenage boy could probably devour 10 or 20 in a single sitting! You can also reserve your karaage by phone, and there’s even a dedicated app for placing orders ahead of time!
If you’re staying in Kumamoto for a while, downloading the app is highly recommended!
