Introducing WARABI

Hello there!
Fresh from folding my very first origami shuriken,
it’s Binako, your Sarukuma writer!!

Today I’m excited to introduce you to
WARABI, a charming little spot located in
Ogawa-machi Kitashinden, Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Right next door to WARABI, you’ll find 55-CHIKEN (Go-Go Chicken), which we’ve featured before.

Newly Reopened: 55-CHIKEN (Go-Go Chicken) β€” So Good You’ll Want to Shout About It Under the Blue Sky (Uki City Ogawa-machi Kitashinden)

Since the two shops share the same lot,
you can simply set your GPS to “Go-Go Chicken” and you’ll arrive at WARABI just the same.

Parking is available right around the shop.
The blue noren curtain on the left belongs to WARABI, and the light blue building on the right is Go-Go Chicken.

Inside, there are table seats plus a cozy sofa seat tucked at the back.
It’s easy to visit with kids, and strollers are welcome too.

Even better β€” pets are also allowed inside.
What a lovely place where the whole family, four-legged members included, can relax together.

By the way, you can also enjoy your Go-Go Chicken purchase at these tables β€” perfect for a savory-and-sweet pairing.

The building was once a gas station, and traces of that past still linger inside β€”
giving the whole space a unique, characterful atmosphere.

WARABI’s Must-Try Menu

Here’s the menu.
For each flavor, you can choose plain or with whipped fresh cream.
There are both iced and hot options β€” perfect for warming up as the cooler season rolls in.

I tried the Fresh Chocolate (650 yen) and the Rich Matcha Milk (650 yen).

The cup is filled halfway with warabi mochi (Japanese bracken-starch jelly)…
What a wonderfully indulgent treat!

And because the warabi mochi is made fresh on the spot, the bottom of the cup feels comfortingly warm in your hands.

First up β€” the Fresh Chocolate (650 yen).

The big noren curtain out front is the perfect photo spot.

A generous swirl of whipped cream sits atop a rich, slightly bitter cocoa drink β€” absolutely delicious.

Not too sweet, but full of depth.

With plenty of warabi mochi inside, it’s truly a drink you can eat.

And here’s the Rich Matcha Milk (650 yen).

The aroma of matcha hits you even before the first sip,
making this a must-try for anyone who loves Japanese green tea.

The earthy bitterness of matcha balances beautifully with the sweetness of milk,
creating a drink that’s surprisingly refreshing and easy to sip.

Matcha and warabi mochi β€” a classic Japanese pairing that simply cannot go wrong.
The fragrant flavors come through wonderfully in every mouthful.

Enjoying chicken and warabi mochi together makes for a wonderfully indulgent afternoon.

If you’re in Kumamoto, please give WARABI a try!
