Introducing Gyu Kurotei

Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Igaguri, writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m excited to introduce you to a hidden gem in Tensui-machi Oama, Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
Gyu Kurotei.

Although it’s part of Tamana, Tensui-machi sits right next to Kumamoto City’s Nishi Ward — making it a perfect detour on a day trip from the city.

This is actually Sarukuma’s very first article featuring Tensui-machi!

I spotted the restaurant while driving along National Route 501!

It’s only 2 km from Kusamakura Onsen Tensui, a popular hot spring spot — perfect for combining lunch with a relaxing soak.

There’s plenty of parking space available.

The restaurant only opened about a year ago, so everything still looks fresh and pristine!

Beautiful flowers welcome you at the entrance.

Inside, you’ll find traditional Japanese-style sunken-kotatsu (horigotatsu) tatami seating — and yes, there’s even a big TV, which is a lifesaver when dining with kids!

Counter seating is also available for solo diners.

Will you top your 100% beef hamburger with green onions?
Or add sausage and karaage (Japanese fried chicken) on the side?

The sirloin steak is also tempting!
For little ones, there are kid-friendly set meals and udon noodles too — perfect for families traveling together.

This time, we ordered the 100% Beef Hamburger for 1,089 yen and the
100% Beef Hamburger with Plenty of Green Onions for 1,188 yen.

We also tried the Chewy Udon Noodles & Karaage Set for 660 yen.

Children’s tableware was provided too — a thoughtful touch for families!

After ordering, you can hear the satisfying “pat-pat” sound of the patties being hand-shaped!
The burgers arrive sizzling hot on an iron skillet — fresh from the kitchen.

The sauce has a unique flavor profile that’s somewhere between grated daikon ponzu and rich demi-glace — a complex, memorable taste!

So… so tender!!
Is this really 100% Japanese beef? The tenderness is unbelievable.

You can easily cut through it with chopsticks.
And the juicy meat juices that flow out — incredible!
I’ve truly stumbled upon a hidden gem!

The broccoli, carrots, and corn come glazed with a sweet finish, so even picky little eaters will dig in happily!

The restaurant is fully non-smoking — including heated tobacco — so it’s a relaxing environment for families with young children.

In the evenings, the menu transforms into a Japanese-style izakaya pub experience with a wide variety of dishes!
Takeout is also available — perfect for grabbing a meal on the go.

If you’re traveling between Kumamoto City and Tamana, be sure to make a stop at Gyu Kurotei. Your taste buds will thank you!
