Marché aux Pains: The Charming Yellow-Roofed Bakery in Koshi City, Kumamoto
2020.10.13

Hello there, fellow travelers!
This is Nanako, your friendly Sarukuma writer.
Here’s a little secret: kids absolutely adore bread, don’t they?
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to a delightful little bakery tucked away in Toyooka, Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Marché aux Pains” (Marushe O Pan).
It’s my 2-year-old son’s absolute favorite spot!

Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood of Koshi City, this bakery is easily recognizable by its cheerful yellow exterior.
It’s conveniently located near two other Sarukuma favorites:
Mitakeya bento shop and Natsui (Hawaii) shaved ice.
[Closed] Mitakeya: Takeout-Only Delicious Bento That Warms the Heart (Suya, Koshi City)
Natsui: A New Sensation of Chewy, Crispy, Cool Shaved Ice (Toyooka, Koshi City)
It’s also just a 10-minute drive from Kumamoto Country Park,
making it a perfect pit stop on your way from Kumamoto City to the park!

Look for the electronic sign in front of the parking lot,
which makes it easy to spot the entrance from the road.

The parking lot is right next to the shop.
It accommodates up to 6 cars.

There’s a charming little eat-in space right in front of the shop.
On sunny days, enjoying your bread outside here is absolutely lovely.
My car-loving son adores watching the cars drive by from this spot!

I noticed a thoughtful notice posted in front of the shop.
They even offer handmade masks—how kind!

Now, let’s step inside!
The shop is compact but cozy, offering not just bread but also masks and lovely handmade goods.
The selection of cute patterned cloth masks is delightful!

The handmade accessories are simply adorable.
They’ll capture any visitor’s heart instantly.

The earrings and hair accessories are gorgeous too!
And then, of course, an incredible array of breads filling every corner!

They offer a wonderful variety of shokupan (Japanese milk bread) too.

Here are the vegetable-filled breads.
Each one is generously stuffed with hearty fillings—incredibly satisfying!
I arrived just before 1 p.m., and the “Pumpkin and Cheese” was already sold out!

Wow, look at this!
So many of my favorite sweet breads!
The Maron Cream Bread is packed with rich chestnut cream!
It really captures the flavors of the season.
My personal favorite is the Black Tea and Apple Bread.
It’s quite generous in size, but the aromatic black tea paired with sweet apple is irresistible,
and the fluffy texture makes it disappear in no time.

And there’s an incredible selection of savory filled breads too.

Plenty of breads that pair beautifully with meals!
Beyond these, there are kid-favorites like Pumpkin Rolls,
Sweet Potato Rolls, Peanut Cream Bread,
and meal-friendly classics like Butter Rolls—and so much more!
The shop is overflowing with delicious-looking bread at every turn!
Don’t miss the refrigerator near the entrance with sandwiches and drinks—be sure to take a peek when you visit!
On a personal note, I always end up buying way too much when I come here!

Here’s everything I picked up today!

Team Sweet Bread!

Team Savory Bread!!
Let’s go through them one by one.

The most popular item: Melon Pan — 151 yen
Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.
I’ve always loved melon pan, but this one’s fluffiness is on a whole other level.
The gentle sweetness is simply divine.

The second most popular: Chocolat — 216 yen
This one is super fluffy too!
It’s loaded with chocolate chips both inside and out.
Despite all those chocolate chips, it’s not overly sweet,
making it a perfect match for coffee.
It’s a hit not just with sweet-loving kids but also with chocolate-loving adults!

A kid-favorite: Pumpkin Roll — 76 yen
Pumpkin is kneaded right into the dough, giving it a gentle natural sweetness.
Even veggie-averse kids are bound to love this one!
I only got one bite before my son claimed the rest…
Now, on to Team Savory Bread!

Root Vegetable Salad Bread — 227 yen
I always grab this one when I feel like I need more vegetables in my diet!

Just look at this jam-packed root vegetable salad!
Lotus root, corn, carrots, hijiki seaweed, burdock and more—
the bread is absolutely bursting with root vegetable salad!
The salad itself is so delicious you’d happily eat it on its own!
With Marché aux Pains’ fantastic dough, it’s an unbeatable combination.
And now, my absolute number-one favorite!

The Bacon Panini — 410 yen!
This panini is kept in the refrigerator next to the register,
and they grill it fresh for you on the spot when you order!
It takes about 4 minutes, so use that time to pick out other breads—perfect timing.

Hot off the grill—crispy outside, melty cheese inside.
The salty bacon, tangy tomato, and carefully selected lettuce
all come together in perfect harmony—pure happiness in every bite.
If you stop by, please give it a try—you won’t regret it!
One more delightful detail: all of their breads are made with premium Yotsuba butter from Hokkaido.
Not only delicious but also reassuring quality—what a wonderful touch.
“Marché aux Pains”.
Delicious bread, an adorable shop—a bakery that simply makes you happy!
Perfect for breakfast at home or a picnic outing.
I’m planning to take some of these breads on a picnic to Country Park with my son very soon!
