Introducing Umi no Sachi Watatsumi

Hello, travelers! I’m Aikero, a writer for SaruKuma.

Today I’m introducing a brand-new spot in Tasaki, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City:
Umi no Sachi Watatsumi.
Tasaki Market’s beloved fishmonger Ikko Suisan opened a seafood bowl (kaisendon) specialty shop on October 7!
“We want more people to know how delicious truly fresh fish can be!”
Every morning, the staff hand-pick the freshest catches and pile them generously over a steaming bowl of white rice β€” simple, hearty, and unforgettable.
Once you taste it, you’ll find yourself heading straight back to Tasaki Market for more!

Be sure to check out other Tasaki Market gourmet spots too β˜…

Let me start with parking info.
From the intersection in front of Round1 Stadium Kumamoto, turn into Tasaki Market.
Drive straight ahead and you’ll spot a yellow paid parking sign.
This is Daikai Suisan Co.’s parking lot β€” but after 9 a.m., it’s free to use!
If it’s full, there’s also a Times paid parking lot at the Higo Bank Tasaki Market Branch.
The shop is located in Ebisukai 1-Bangai (1st Street).
Walking back the way you came from the parking lot, you’ll see β€” on the left β€” the streets numbered 3rd, 2nd, and 1st in order, so it’s easy to navigate.
Pass Iekei Ramen Jugoya, then turn left immediately, and the entrance shown in the photo will appear.
Walk all the way through Ebisukai 1-Bangai and the shop will appear on your left near the exit.
Here’s the storefront.
It was my first visit, but I had no trouble finding it! (^^)/
Lots of grand-opening flowers!
There are seats on the opposite side too.
No high chairs are available, but strollers are welcome inside.
The menu has 4 options!

・Watatsumi Kaisendon (Signature Seafood Bowl) β€” 1,300 yen
・Hon-Maguro Don (Bluefin Tuna Bowl) β€” 2,000 yen
・Salmon Don β€” 1,500 yen
・Maguro & Negitoro Don (Tuna & Minced Tuna Bowl) β€” 1,100 yen

Large rice +50 yen; small rice is also available at the same price.
The Watatsumi Kaisendon comes loaded with 7 different toppings!
Aside from the always-included amberjack (kanpachi), salmon, miyabi sea bream, and negitoro, the rest changes daily based on the morning’s catch.
During my visit, I got seared bonito (hagatsuo), beltfish (tachiuo), and boiled shrimp!
Getting the day’s special each visit is half the fun β™«

Order and pay at the register first, then take a seat.
Note: cash only!
Water is self-service.
For prices like these, I’ll happily pour my own water β€” no complaints! lol
Two soy sauces available β€” sweet and regular.
And next to them… Fu-shio yuzu kosho (yuzu-pepper salt)?!
Oh nice!
I love yuzu kosho β€” can’t wait to try it!

Umi no Sachi Watatsumi β€” Recommended Menu

Behold β€” the Watatsumi Kaisendon!
The beltfish glistens like a star β˜…

Those adorable star-shaped cucumbers are from Kumamoto Toppen Veggies.
They’re grown with reduced pesticides specifically for Umi no Sachi Watatsumi!
Gorgeous colors that make the bowl a feast for the eyes before you even take a bite β™«
Itadakimasu!
First things first β€” the slices are huge AND thick!
Already I’m in heaven!
And because they’re ultra-fresh, the texture is perfectly firm!
The seared bonito is thick and seriously satisfying too!
The rice is plain white rice (not vinegared sushi rice).
With such generous fish on top, you can’t help but devour the rice…!
Now to try the Fu-shio yuzu kosho.
The spicy kick of yuzu kosho pairs beautifully with mild white-fleshed fish!
I actually had a brutal canker sore at the time, but my craving for the salt won out over the pain. (Ouch!)
A clear soup is included too β€” a great touch.
The rice portion was generous, but somehow it disappeared before I knew it.
Apparently most women finish the regular size with no problem.
If you’re worried, just request a small portion when ordering.

Umi no Sachi Watatsumi β€” The Story Behind It

Aikero
Aikero
So this place was opened by a fish shop, right?
Was there a particular reason behind it?

Watatsumi Staff
Watatsumi Staff
We always felt many people don’t know how delicious truly fresh fish can be.
Our fish shop also runs a mobile sales operation, and we kept asking ourselves: how can we share more of this great fish with more people? Together as a team, we decided, “Let’s serve seafood bowls right here at Tasaki Market!”
When the space behind our fish shop became vacant, we knew that was the place to start.
