Manei Shokudo in Tasaki, Kumamoto: Affordable, Fresh Seafood Bowls (and Surprisingly Famous Offal!) at the City’s Wholesale Market
2025.03.14

A Sarukuma writer visits Manei Shokudo, a beloved local diner inside Kumamoto’s Tasaki Wholesale Market in Nishi Ward. Prices start from just 650 yen. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.
Introducing Manei Shokudo
Hello travelers! This is Aikero, writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to Tasaki, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City, to a humble market diner called
Manei Shokudo (万栄食堂).
*The official kanji is 万榮食堂.
Craving a really good seafood rice bowl (kaisen-don)? My husband and I headed straight to Tasaki Market — the city’s wholesale fish market — to find one. ♫
If you’ve ever thought, “I’d love to eat at Tasaki Market, but it feels a little intimidating to wander into,” you’re not alone!
Hopefully after reading this, you’ll feel ready to say, “Alright, let’s go!”
So, let’s dive right in! (^^)/
We entered the market from the side of the 7-Eleven Kumamoto Kamidai 2-chome store, right next to Coco’s Kumamoto Kamidai. You can also enter from the Higo Bank Kumamoto Market Branch entrance, near the Round1 building.
There’s a small parking area right in front of the restaurant — though the painted lines are faded and a bit hard to spot (;^ω^)
Heads up: Manei Shokudo has two entrances!
The parking lot is on the Yusei Nishi-Kyushu Seika side of the building.
If the lot is full or the spots are hard to find, head over to the Daikai Suisan parking lot. The big sign says “paid parking,” but after 9:00 a.m. it’s actually free to use! (^^)/
Coming in from the Higo Bank side, this lot is much easier to spot and park in. ♫
Remember, this is a working market — vehicles and forklifts are constantly moving around. Please drive slowly and watch your step!
We arrived around 10:30 a.m. on a Monday, and the place was already buzzing! Compared with most market eateries, Manei Shokudo stays open relatively late — until 15:00 — so if you can shift your lunch a little earlier or later than the rush, you’ll likely walk right in.
The menu is plastered all over the walls — old-school Japanese diner vibes at their best.
Craning your neck at the wall does get tiring though, so there’s a tabletop menu to make life easier. lol
Here’s a peek at some of the offerings:
・Ikura-don (salmon roe rice bowl) — 1,650 yen
・Sanshoku-don (three-color seafood bowl) — 1,200 yen
・Negitoro-don (minced tuna and scallion bowl) — 1,200 yen
・Maguro Yamakake-don (tuna with grated yam bowl) — 970 yen
・Sashimi Moriawase Teishoku (assorted sashimi set meal) — 1,500 yen
This is a fish market, after all!
But here’s a fun twist — Manei Shokudo is also famous for its hormon (offal) dishes!
・Hormon Teishoku (offal set meal) — 770 yen
・Basuji Hormon Teishoku (horse tendon offal set meal) — 830 yen
・Subuta Teishoku (sweet & sour pork set meal) — 830 yen
While we were there, several customers were ordering the basuji hormon teishoku. Adventurous eaters, take note!
Manei Shokudo Recommended Menu
From back to front: maguro yamakake-don, maguro nakaochi (tuna scrape from the bones, 530 yen), and sanshoku-don.
A seafood bowl topped with lettuce — that’s a first for me!
And the yam (yamaimo) here isn’t grated and gooey but cut into crisp matchsticks (●^o^●)
The server who brought our food kindly explained how to enjoy each dish. ♫
They recommend the house-made sauce (jika-sei tare), but soy sauce is on the table too if you’d rather go classic. (^^)/
Wait — did you spot it?
It’s called “sanshoku-don” (three-color bowl), but mine had three kinds of fish PLUS tuna nakaochi PLUS sea urchin (uni)! Σ(・ω・ノ)ノ
That’s basically a five-color bowl for the price of three!!!!!
Incredible value for money!!
I went all in with the house tare sauce. ♫
It’s refreshing and slightly tangy, infused with shiso (Japanese perilla) leaves.
Absolutely incredible — I could drink it!!
The fish on offer changes daily!
The topping rotates between uni or ikura, while the tuna nakaochi is a constant. (*’ω’*)
On our visit, the lineup was sea bream (tai), wild Japanese sea bass (tennen suzuki), and amberjack (kanpachi).
Each piece is generous, with a satisfying springy bite — undeniably fresh!
And surprisingly, the lettuce works! Crisp and clean against the rich fish. ♫
Here’s my husband’s maguro yamakake-don.
That glossy egg yolk on top? Pure visual magic.
We couldn’t help ourselves and added a side of maguro nakaochi too.
Topped with that house-made tare, it was light, refreshing, and devoured in seconds.
Honestly, after a feast like that, we were thoroughly satisfied.
(Though we still went on to one more food spot afterward. lol)
The fish here is sourced straight from the wholesalers (nakaoroshi) just steps away.
“Regular folks can buy from them too — try to get there before about 8 a.m. And if you’re coming, wear rubber boots!”
that’s the local tip we received. ♫
Next time, I’d love to come back early and shop the market itself. (*’ω’*)
We’ll keep covering more Tasaki Market gourmet finds — stay tuned! ♫
