LATOBASE: A Stylish Secret Base for Grown-Ups in Rural Kumamoto (Yoshitomi, Shisui-machi, Kikuchi City)
2020.11.05

Welcome to LATOBASE
Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Gussan, your local guide from SaruKuma.
On November 1, 2020, an exciting new destination quietly opened its doors in Yoshitomi, Shisui-machi, Kikuchi City:
LATOBASE
It has quickly become one of the most talked-about weekend hangout spots in Kumamoto Prefecture!
To celebrate the grand opening, a lively local marketplace was held, and I’m thrilled to share what makes this place so special.
Ta-daaa!
Here it is — the entrance.
The distinctive atmosphere and impressive size will stop you in your tracks. “What on earth is this striking building?” is a common first reaction.

Here’s the magic: this building was originally a disused cattle barn. It was lovingly transformed bit by bit by Mr. and Mrs. Morimoto — affectionately known as the “village chiefs” — together with a community of supporters they call “villagers.”
Pure nostalgia!
Even though it was once an aging barn, the way old and new have been fused together is incredibly stylish — a perfect example of Japanese countryside renovation done right.
The concept? “A secret hideout for adults to return to their childhood.”
Doesn’t that name just spark your imagination?
There are even before-and-after photos on display. Even with no architecture background, you can see the transformation is nothing short of amazing. If you have any interest in renovation or adaptive reuse, this building alone is worth the trip.
Now let me introduce some of the wonderful local vendors who set up shop on opening day.
First up, the booth from LaTo Farm, the team behind LATOBASE itself.
They served popcorn, craft beer, and butternut squash soup.

Yume Miruku ~ Yoshii Bokujo (Dairy Farm)
Soft-serve ice cream and drinkable yogurt.
Imoya Chobei
Ikinari dango (a Kumamoto specialty: sweet potato and red bean wrapped in dough) and sweet potato chips.
Panda-go Kumamoto
Japanese-style fried chicken (karaage) seasoned with salt-pepper or soy sauce.
Bamboo Village
Handmade goods and homemade curry.
Masunaya Sake Shop
Natural wines.
Smoked Foods Workshop “En”
Artisan sausages and cheese.

cafe zakka bb
Lifestyle goods and minestrone soup.
niko to wakka
Goods and shio koji (salted rice malt) snacks.
Hachijuhachiya
Locally grown rice from Tamana.
Sunflower Oil Workshop
Kapok Music Band
And there were many more booths overflowing with stylish, delicious, and joyful finds — a wonderfully lively opening market!
Why You Should Visit LATOBASE
The view from the windows of LATOBASE is breathtaking.
And just beyond that view, there’s a whole world of fun for kids waiting outside!
A sandbox,
a wooden swing,
toys,
ring toss, plus hula hoops, ride-on cars, and even a scribble/drawing space are all set up so children can play freely.
A place where adults can enjoy themselves AND kids never get bored — isn’t that the dream?
Spending a day off in a stylish atmosphere, eating great food, picking up beautiful things, and simply relaxing is wonderful. But for parents, that’s not quite enough.
You also want your kids to be able to run around and play. Outside, in nature if possible…
Finally, a place that delivers both!
Whether you’re a parent looking for a family-friendly day out, a couple wanting a fresh take on a date, or simply someone craving a lively spot in a time of fewer events — please come visit.
LATOBASE will continue to host fun events going forward.
The next event is scheduled for Sunday, December 6.
The latest event info is shared on social media, so be sure to follow them!
