Introducing Higodori

This is Binako, your SaruKuma writer, here to share a tasty corner of Kumamoto with you.

Today’s spotlight is on Higodori, a beloved karaage (Japanese fried chicken) shop located in Kawae, Ozu-machi, Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

In addition to the Ogawa branch, Higodori has shops in Todoroki and Yatsushiro — both worth checking out if you’re exploring the area!
(Note: the Yatsushiro branch is currently temporarily closed.)

The entrance features a gentle slope, making it easy to enter with strollers or wheelchairs — a great touch for families and travelers with accessibility needs.

There are 4 parking spaces right in front of the shop.

The eye-catching signboard is easy to spot from the road.
You’ll instantly think, “Yep, this is the place!”

Beside the cash register, rows of golden karaage await their turn to be packed up — a magical sight for any fried chicken lover.

Higodori also accepts phone reservations, so placing an order ahead of lunchtime makes pick-up wonderfully smooth.
They even offer party platters (“hors d’oeuvre” sets) — perfect for group gatherings or picnics during your travels.

Higodori’s Recommended Menu

The menu features both bento (lunch box) sets and à la carte items.

For travelers wanting to sample several styles of karaage in one visit, the variety here is fantastic — and the prices are very reasonable.

There are also tempting summer-only menu items.
If you’re visiting in warmer months, definitely give them a try!

The “Passion Miracle Karaage” (200 yen).

Next, I tried the Demon Green Onion Salt Karaage Bento (450 yen).

Absolutely loaded with green onions!

For a green onion lover like me, this view is pure heaven.

The aroma of fresh negi (green onion) fills your mouth — pure luxury.
The salt seasoning is perfectly balanced, and the onion-coated karaage delivers a traffic jam of umami flavors.

It’s the kind of dish where every bite makes you hungrier for the next.

You won’t be able to put down your chopsticks once that white rice meets the karaage.
It really is the ultimate combo…
