Hello, everyone!
This is Binako, writer for Sarukuma!

Today, I’m excited to share our now-traditional Sarukuma Writers Roundtable — this time with a delicious twist!

The theme of this roundtable is none other than one of Japan’s most beloved snacks and lunch options, with countless shops popping up across Kumamoto:
“Sandwich Tasting Comparison — Egg Sandwiches Required!”
Woohoo!

Sandwiches you can eat with one hand anytime, anywhere… and with egg sandwiches as a must-have, we’re bound to make some delicious discoveries!

Joining this roundtable are our wonderful mom writers:
Gussan, Binako, Asukarando, and Mikan!

Hope you enjoy the journey!

Held at the Hiroki District of Suizenji Ezuko Park!

Since the weather was still warm, we decided to host the roundtable at the Hiroki District of Suizenji Ezuko Park.
Munching on sandwiches outdoors under the blue sky —
what a luxuriously happy way to spend an afternoon! lol

The Hiroki District of Suizenji Ezuko Park has a spacious parking lot, making it easy even for larger vehicles. The park is covered with grass, so kids can run around barefoot, and the vast grounds are perfect for bike practice or playing ball games to your heart’s content.

With plenty of rivers and waterside spots, it’s also a fantastic place for splashing around in summer.
The bright, beaming smiles of these children truly capture pure happiness!
Whether they’re in long sleeves, down jackets, or tank tops — season doesn’t matter here. Haha!

Meet the Star Sandwiches

Now let me introduce each of the wonderful sandwiches that joined our roundtable.

Each shop has its own detailed article written by our writers, which you can find via the links at the end of each introduction.

【sandwich cafe TATOMIYA】

When you think of TATOMIYA, you think of stunning cross-sections
and unbelievably hearty sandwiches!
With their wide variety of options that tempt every craving, these are truly Instagram-worthy sandwiches!

Just look at the volume of a single sandwich!
Veggies, bacon, and egg packed tightly together create the most beautiful cross-section.

【Delish SANDWICH】

Delish Sandwich is
a reservation-only sandwich shop.
You can pick up your order in-store or have it delivered, which is a fantastic perk!

Look at this gorgeous box!
Absolutely impressive.

Even when ordering takeout, the packaging is perfect for taking on a picnic. Plus, getting three sandwiches in one box is such a thoughtful touch!

【VIKING BAKERY ZERO Kengun Branch】

In mid-November, Viking Bakery — famous for their shokupan (Japanese milk bread) —
opened a new sandwich shop called “ZERO” in Kengun.
They already have a location in Chuo-ku, but having a shop closer to home is wonderful!

With plenty of egg and the kind of bread quality you’d expect from a renowned shokupan bakery, this sandwich is something special.
The two-pieces-per-pack design is also great for sharing!

【Gateau Henri】

Gateau Henri isn’t strictly a sandwich specialty shop — it’s a beloved local store that crafts both bread and cakes, adored by many regular customers.

With its easy-to-eat cuts and comforting classic shape that everyone — young and old — knows and loves,
this is truly the king of sandwiches!

Sandwich Tasting Time!

And now — the moment we’d all been waiting for. Time to dig in!

We could barely contain our excitement!

We sliced everything into easy-to-share pieces…

Cheers!! lol

“The runny, soft-boiled egg is incredibly delicious!”
“As expected from a bakery — the bread flavor really shines through!”

Viking Bakery’s sandwich offered a perfect collaboration of half-cooked, runny egg with the rich, fragrant shokupan that only a true bakery can produce.

“The sweetness of the egg is absolutely amazing!”
“The crunch of the fresh vegetables is the best!”

TATOMIYA’s slightly sweet egg paired with crisp, fresh vegetables made for the perfect match.
The first thing everyone said in unison was:
“The volume is INSANE! lol”
Deciding how to slice and share it was already half the fun!

“The black pepper kick adds such a great accent — so delicious!”
“The pairing of tomato and lettuce is just incredible!”

Delish Sandwich’s appetite-stirring spicy accent had us wanting to keep eating forever — a sandwich you simply can’t put down.

“This is THE classic sandwich! Such a comforting and delicious flavor!”
“The ham flavor matches perfectly, and there’s so much egg!”

Gateau Henri delivered the timeless deliciousness of generous egg and ham — a comforting, never-boring classic that warms the heart.

Final Thoughts

Chatting joyfully with fellow writers and their kids,
eating sandwiches under the open blue sky was on a whole different level of delicious!

Each sandwich had its own unique flavor, and even comparing egg sandwiches alone revealed fascinating differences in texture and richness.

With sandwich fillings sometimes tumbling onto our hands, the laughter never stopped — it felt like we were caught in a whirlwind of joy! lol

And the cutest, most heartwarming sandwich of the day went to:
Gussan’s son’s homemade special sandwich!
Packed with vibrant green vegetables — absolutely lovely!

Truly, it was the most wonderful time —
our stomachs and hearts were both completely full!

Ayu Mama also joined us, and we ended up chatting deep into the late afternoon. lol
Spending leisurely time with kids playing nearby is truly such a precious luxury.
