Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Binako, a SaruKuma writer who can never seem to stick to a workout routine β and yes, I keep scolding myself about it!
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to “Naniwaya Honten”, a charming little shop located in Muro, Ozu Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture.

This wonderful shop specializes in making and selling “Dosento” β a beloved traditional sweet of Ozu Town.
Have you ever heard of Dosento before? It’s a delicate confection made from glutinous mochi rice, with a history stretching back more than 160 years!
Naniwaya Honten is now run by the seventh generation of the founding family β a true heritage shop with deep roots in the community. My little sister absolutely adores Dosento, so my mom often brought it home as a treat when we were growing up.
Wow, this brings back such fond memories!

The parking area is on the gravel lot directly across from the shop. Just look for the green traffic cones β that’s where you should park.

Step inside, and you’ll find a beautiful display of Dosento gift sets in every size. They make a wonderful souvenir or gift to bring back from Kumamoto!
Box of 15 pieces β 1,000 yen
Box of 30 pieces β 2,000 yen
Box of 60 pieces β 3,800 yen
If you regularly host guests, these make a delightful sweet to serve with tea!

For travelers who want a smaller taste, there are also 2-piece packs available!
Plain with Generous Anko (Sweet Red Bean) β 2 pieces, 200 yen
Mixed Pack: Plain & Kumquat β 250 yen

Box of 8 pieces β 1,200 yen
This size is just right for sharing!

Unfortunately these were sold out during my visit, but they also offer:
Traditional Dosento β 2 pieces, 120 yen
Aso no Yuki (Snow of Aso) β 1 piece, 250 yen
Recommended Treats

This time, I picked up:
Mixed Pack of Kumquat & Plain β 2 pieces, 250 yen

The packaging is designed for easy opening, so you can enjoy them right after purchase!

I tried the kumquat one first. It carries a sweet, refreshing aroma with a wonderfully fluffy texture.

The kumquat is generously kneaded right into the sweet, giving it a gentle sweetness balanced by a refreshing, mellow finish.

The plain version with generous anko (sweet red bean paste) is packed full of rich, smooth filling β absolutely delicious!

It’s airy and light, and the moment it touches your tongue, it melts away beautifully.
It pairs perfectly with a hot cup of Japanese green tea.
This nostalgic flavor brings back so many warm memories. Even just one piece is enough to make you feel relaxed and at peace.
If you’re visiting Kumamoto and want to experience a truly authentic local sweet, please stop by Naniwaya Honten and try this gentle, soothing taste of Ozu Town’s heritage!
