Introducing Flat Source Toy & Kids Play Space

Hello travelers! It’s Kurubushi from the Sarukuma travel team ☆彡

Today we’re heading to Ozu Town in Kikuchi District, just a short drive from central Kumamoto, to visit
【Flat Source Toy & Kids Play Space】 — a hidden gem for families traveling with little ones in Japan!
This wonderful space was created with the dream of building a welcoming home base in Kumamoto where moms, dads, and babies could discover their child’s unique charm.

The project began as a 2022 crowdfunding campaign, and thanks to support from many caring people, this beautiful space came to life ♪

The staff includes certified toy consultants — specialists trained to choose toys that match each child’s stage of growth and development — alongside licensed childcare professionals who are always on site.

From helping kids expand their play to advising parents on choosing the right toys and hosting parenting support events,

this is a warm, welcoming place that becomes a heart-home for both parents and children.

The parking lot is tucked away in a residential neighborhood and isn’t visible from the main road, so

when you spot this signboard between the traditional Japanese-style walls, head straight in with confidence!

Trust the sign and drive right in! (As a worrier myself, I drove past once thinking, “Wait, am I really allowed in here?”)

Inside you’ll find a nice, spacious parking area.

The space at the very back is reserved for kei-cars (Japanese mini vehicles), and the larger spot beside it is for minivans.

Here’s the entrance — just look for the signboard ^^

Inside, the floor is slightly raised in traditional Japanese style, so remove your shoes and place your bags on the rack.

Then check in at the reception desk.

The space operates in time slots: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the morning and 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM in the afternoon.

Start with a one-hour session, and if your kids aren’t ready to leave, you can extend up to two hours.

1 hour: 600 yen for adults / 400 yen for children

2 hours: 1,200 yen for adults / 700 yen for children

Babies under 6 months enter free.

The space is primarily for preschool-age children, but elementary school siblings of preschoolers are welcome too ^^

To ensure relaxed, safe play, only about 5 family groups are admitted per session, so advance reservations are highly recommended.

Bookings for regular visits and events can be made through the official Flat Source website.

While full meals aren’t allowed inside, kids do tend to get hungry on and off, right?

Light snacks are okay in the corner area, so feel free to bring along onigiri (rice balls) or other quick bites.

Just give the staff a heads-up that you’d like to have a snack, and everything goes smoothly ^^

For longer-term visitors, there’s a fantastic weekday-only monthly pass — visit just three times and it pays for itself!

As a parent who spends time at home with a preschooler myself, I know the daily struggle of figuring out where to take the kids,

and having unlimited prepaid access is such a relief… When in doubt, head to Flat Source!

And here’s the best part: over 100 carefully curated Good Toy award-winning toys!

More than 50 are rotated and displayed at any given time,

so kids absolutely won’t get bored (guaranteed!)

By the way, what exactly are Good Toys?

They’re toys selected through votes by toy consultants from across Japan — including childcare workers, pediatricians, university professors, and occupational therapists.

The chosen toys nurture the five senses, foster imagination and creativity, and encourage children to think and play independently.

Flat Source also hosts marché markets and special events ^^

There are handwashing stations,

and the restroom even comes with a child-size toilet seat adapter and step stool ^^

There’s a baby holder seat too.

The diaper-changing space is generously roomy.

The nursing room is curtained off for privacy,

with a comfortable chair waiting inside ^^

Special programs are also offered, including same-day craft experiences!

Hinoki (Japanese cypress) Camera — 1,700 yen

An actual camera that clicks when you press the shutter! The satisfying click makes even babies want to push it ♪

Hinoki Toy Car — 1,500 yen

What a lovely idea — gifting a handcrafted wooden car as your child’s very first vehicle toy.

Hinoki Rattle — 1,500 yen

The gentle wooden sound is so soothing — perfect for a baby’s developing ears ^^

Winter Limited: Hinoki Wood Shaving Flowers — 800 yen

The soft scent of cypress fills the room — a beautiful natural accent for any home ^^

Flat Source is also an ambassador for the Gran Mocco baby carrier brand, so you can try one out on the spot!

Since these are everyday essentials, being able to test before buying is such a wonderful feature!

The toys are mostly wooden, but there are also pretend-play kitchen sets and more ^^

Balance toys,

plus active play options like bowling and balance beams.

There are also fingertip and brain-teaser toys that get kids fully absorbed.

Many of these toys come from a community-driven “Toy Donation Project,”

and photos of the donors are displayed alongside their gifts.

It really makes you want to treat each toy with extra care,

and seeing how many adults care deeply about children’s futures gives such a heartwarming feeling.

Top Highlights of Flat Source

Over 100 carefully selected Good Toy award-winning toys!

The fact that 50+ rotate through the displays is the biggest selling point,

but here’s the magic ingredient: a real toy consultant on site.

They’ll show you brand-new ways to play that you’d never have imagined…

and set up clever situations that invite kids to expand on what they’re doing…

The childcare staff offer gentle prompts that draw children deeply into focused play.

Inspired by these prompts, the kids start expanding the toys into entirely new games.

Picture books related to each toy are placed nearby,

so a single toy or interest can blossom into many directions of discovery.

Many of the toys and books are also available for purchase,

and some visitors even buy them as baby shower gifts ♪

At the end of the play session, the staff invites everyone to clean up together,

and the kids actually competed to put things away — they had a blast doing it ^^

The session wraps up on the tatami area with a glove puppet show, followed by…

a picture book read-aloud.

The finale was a hand-play song, and we left feeling completely fulfilled after our two-hour visit ^^

I came in expecting just a toy-filled play space,

but it felt more like a beautiful introduction to preschool — where parents and kids learn and have fun together ♪

And — surprise — there are goats here too!

Including adorable baby goats — meeeeh!

When my kids weren’t ready to leave, saying “Let’s go say hi to the goats!”

worked like magic to ease the transition outside, ha!

The Heart Behind Flat Source

We sat down with Mr. Hashimoto, the founder of Flat Source, to hear the story behind the space.

What inspired you to create Flat Source?

Mr. Hashimoto
Mr. Hashimoto
Even when you try to play at your child’s level, you sometimes can’t help but step in and direct things… Through my toy consultant studies, I learned how important it is to flatten your heart, take a step back, and truly observe your child.
I used to constantly compare my child to others online and around me, and I missed real opportunities to see her for who she was. I created this place hoping to help mothers who feel the same way I once did.

Kurubushi
Kurubushi
I see. I sometimes catch myself saying “this is how you play with that” — but watching quietly really does help children grow, doesn’t it?

Mr. Hashimoto
Mr. Hashimoto
Exactly. We watch over the children as they play, and when they hit a stuck point, we step in with prompts that expand their play and help them rediscover it on their own.

Kurubushi
Kurubushi
That’s so reassuring! For parents who want their kids to play but find that children’s centers or community support spaces don’t quite fit, this place gives them the comfort of being able to watch their kids while having someone like you to consult with.

Mr. Hashimoto
Mr. Hashimoto
Thank you. Beyond toy play, we host nutrition consultations, preschool selection talks, sex education sessions led by midwives, and various workshops and events.
We hope moms see this as their cozy “third place” — somewhere that feels like home outside of home.

Kurubushi
Kurubushi
Comfort for moms is so important! When I actually visited, I got to watch the children focus deeply, find their own ways to play, and I really felt how powerful these toys are at drawing out kids’ creativity!

Mr. Hashimoto
Mr. Hashimoto
That makes me so happy to hear. When you step back and observe, you’ll notice children think for themselves, enjoying every sound and texture as they expand their play in their own way.
Kurubushi
Kurubushi
Yes! And the gentle sound of wood is so calming and warm — my child loved it, and I felt completely relaxed too. Honestly, before visiting, I just thought of it as a wooden toy play space, so I was genuinely surprised by your philosophy and the beauty of Good Toys.

Mr. Hashimoto
Mr. Hashimoto
Good Toys are wonderful, but it’s hard to collect many at home, and sometimes children just don’t engage with them.
Here we rotate around 60 of our 100+ toys at any time, so families are sure to find something their child loves. Most are also available for purchase, so please come by and play with us anytime!

Kurubushi
Kurubushi
It’s wonderful that you can buy toys you love or simply enjoy a wide variety of them on the spot!
Finally, could you tell us where the name “Flat Source” comes from?

Mr. Hashimoto
Mr. Hashimoto
“Flat” comes from the musical flat (♭) — to step down a half-tone and see your child from a level, even perspective. “Source” is our wish that this place becomes the source of energy and power for babies, moms, and dads alike.

Kurubushi
Kurubushi
The musical flat and the level perspective… both are such important lenses for nurturing a child’s growth!
