About Sumiyoshi Coast Park (Nagabeta Kaishouro)
Hello there!
This is Maru, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to Sumiyoshi-cho, Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to visit
“Sumiyoshi Coast Park (Nagabeta Kaishouro)”.

This park is a popular pit stop for travelers driving toward the Amakusa region ππ¨
Tucked just beyond Sumiyoshi Coast Park, you’ll find the famous TV-commercial filming location: Nagabeta Kaishouro!
The name is read “Naga-beta Kai-shou-ro” β a true tongue-twister even for Japanese visitors!
Spacious parking and plenty of vending machines!
There are also covered benches with shaded roofs.

Restrooms, drinking water, and hand-washing stations are all available.

Visitors were quietly enjoying the ocean view at their own pace π
It’s the kind of place where you can just zone out and breathe.
Grab some snacks or a takeaway lunch and enjoy a meal here β it’s the perfect setting π

There’s a small sandy area where kids can hunt for seashells and explore π¦π§
You may even spot crabs and hermit crabs scuttling around π¦
There’s even a designated photo spot for great memory shots π
Why You Should Visit Sumiyoshi Coast Park (Nagabeta Kaishouro)

And here it is β Nagabeta Kaishouro.
A “kaishouro” is a path that appears only when the tide goes out. This one was originally built to help local fishermen reach their boats.
The road stretches roughly 1 kilometer into the sea, lined with 24 utility poles. When the tide rises, the path vanishes underwater β leaving only the poles standing in the middle of the ocean for a truly otherworldly scene.
I happened to arrive at sunset, right around high tide π
The result was a photo that looked almost like an oil painting β¨
After dark, the lamps on the utility poles light up, creating a dreamlike scene that many compare to the world of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. It’s no surprise this place has gone viral as a must-see Instagram spot!

For the best view of the poles standing in the sea, time your visit for around 3 hours before or after high tide.
It’s also one of Kumamoto’s loveliest sunset spots β definitely worth a stop on your road trip!
Be sure to capture that perfect shot π·π
