A SaruKuma writer’s first-hand visit to “Tashiroya – Miyaji, Ichinomiya-machi, Aso City -” in Kumamoto. Prices start from just 100 yen. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.

Welcome to Tashiroya

Hello, fellow travelers!
It’s Binako, your SaruKuma writer (and yes, I’ve been eating a little too much lately!).

Today, I’m taking you to a charming little sweets shop tucked into Miyaji, Ichinomiya-machi, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Tashiroya”.

You can park right in front of the shop β€” and what a view! Tashiroya sits directly across from the legendary Aso Shrine.

The towering torii gate is so majestic, you’ll instinctively bow as you pass through. Don’t miss the lively shopping street behind Aso Shrine, lined with delicious local eats β€” we’ve covered it on SaruKuma too!

The weathered noren curtain at the entrance to Tashiroya is full of character β€” pure old-school Japanese charm.

From outside, you can watch the kaiten manju (Japanese-style filled cakes) being grilled fresh β€” and trust me, the sight alone will make your stomach growl.
Both white and black sweet bean paste varieties are just 100 yen each β€” an unbeatable price!

I genuinely believe sweets that please everyone β€” from kids to grandparents β€” are the best kind. These make a perfect souvenir to bring along; they’re guaranteed crowd-pleasers.

Tashiroya’s Must-Try Menu

This time, I went with the black bean paste version (100 yen). Just look at that adorable shape!

Break it open, and a cloud of steam rises as silky-smooth sweet bean paste oozes out β€” pure magic.

The outer skin is thin and crisp from the grill, so good you’d happily eat it on its own β€” but combined with that meltingly soft red bean filling, the flavors hit a whole new level.

Because the filling is chunky tsubu-an (whole-bean paste), you also get the satisfying texture of plump azuki beans in every bite. It’s indulgence at its finest β€” and yes, now I’m dying to try the white bean version too.

Whether before or after your visit to Aso Shrine, why not warm up with this nostalgic, comforting Japanese sweet?
