Today I’m bringing you a special edition of our Kumamoto City Zoo & Botanical Gardens series.

It’s already September, but the heat just keeps lingering!
When it’s this hot, don’t you find yourself craving a cool escape?

So in this special edition, I want to introduce you to the
water play spots hidden inside the zoo and botanical gardens.

Adults: ÂĄ500
Elementary & Junior High Students: ÂĄ100
Preschoolers: Free
(Elementary and junior high students living in Kumamoto City enter free with a name tag or student ID)
Parking: ÂĄ200 per car on weekends and holidays (free on weekdays)
Highlights
Did you know there are actually water play spots right inside
the zoo and botanical gardens?
Yes — they really exist!!!
First up is this gem, located inside the Botanical Garden side (West Gate) parking lot!
It’s tucked right inside the parking lot on the botanical garden side!
Locals affectionately call this spot “Suijin-sama” (the Water God),
and it’s filled with refreshingly cold spring water!
It just goes to show — the zoo and botanical gardens sit right next to Lake Ezu,
which is famous for its abundant natural spring water!
You’ll spot it easily — just look for the cluster of large rocks
scattered inside the parking lot.
There are even small aquatic creatures living here,
and my son loves catching tiny shrimp with his net!
(We bring them home and care for them properly in our aquarium.)
There’s even a covered pavilion (azumaya),
so adults can relax in the shade while watching the kids play!
Restrooms are located right next door, so you’re covered if anyone gets a chill.

There’s also a drinking fountain where you can rinse off your hands and feet.

The water is shallow and dotted with large rocks,
so it’s better suited for splashing and wading than actual swimming.
There are no changing rooms, of course,
so wear something easy to change in and out of.
And here’s another spot — at the very back of the Main Gate parking lot!
Tucked inside a small stone-walled enclosure,
you’ll find another little spring water spot.
Think of it as a foot bath, but cold —
a perfect place to dip your feet or hands
and soak in the chilly spring water from Lake Ezu.
What a blessing from Lake Ezu!
The closest restrooms are the ones right in front of the main gate.
This spot is especially great for little ones!
Both spots are conveniently located inside the zoo and botanical gardens parking lots.
After working up a sweat exploring the zoo,
why not cool down with the icy spring water from Lake Ezu before heading home?
