A SaruKuma writer pays a personal visit to “Gecko Asianfoods & Bar” in Kamitori-machi and shares the full scoop. Family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours all in one place.
Hello there!
[SaruKuma] writer Cho-san here!
Today I’m introducing a wonderful spot in
Kamitori-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
“Gecko Asianfoods & Bar”
(ゲッコーアジアンフーズ&バー).
As I was strolling from Kamitori toward Namikizaka,
an intriguing sign caught my eye, and I decided to pop in solo!
The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of the Asai Building, the same building that houses Renga-tei.
The word “Gapao Rice” on the chalkboard pulled me right in.
Just head up the stairs in front of you, and the shop is immediately to your left.
(There’s also an elevator at the back of the building.)
Since this is a bar, I was a little worried whether I could just come in for food…
but they welcomed me with the warmest smile!
The vibe at the entrance already feels great.
As noted on the chalkboard,
even though it’s a bar,
there’s no cover charge — even for just a single drink, which is a real treat for travelers!
The interior has a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere that makes you want to linger — even if it’s your first visit.
There’s a beautiful Asian-inspired ambience, with oriental string lights and stylish details everywhere you look.
The colorful Moroccan lamps are seriously adorable!
Toward the back you’ll find two tables for four,
two tables for two,
and counter seats too — perfect for any kind of visit.
From the counter, you can admire the impressive lineup of liquor on the shelves.
The day I visited happened to coincide with a Fuji Rock YouTube live stream,
so I got to enjoy great music while I dined — pure bliss!
Recommended Menu
The menu is split into food and drinks.
Let’s start with the food menu.
A wonderful selection of Asian dishes awaits.
Beyond the main dishes, there’s also a generous variety of small plates!
They even have desserts — what a lineup!
Next up, the drink menu.
There’s also a great variety of non-alcoholic drinks, so it’s perfect even if you’re just here for a meal.
As you’d expect from a bar, the alcohol selection is second to none.
Even I — not a beer expert — recognized Singha from Thailand on the list!
That authentic Asian flair just keeps building.
The cocktail selection is also incredibly extensive!
What I ordered, having decided before I even walked in, was the Gapao Rice (¥800).
When ordering, I was told I could adjust the spice level,
so I gave a vague “not too spicy, please…” request. Haha.
I ordered a café au lait for my drink, which arrived first.
It was a hot day, so I gulped it right down!
So delicious~♬
And here’s where I have to highlight not just the amazing café au lait, but one more thing!
The book selection on the shelf!!!
[Ore, Tsushima]
[Dou Deshou Book — Inaugural Issue]
Just seeing those two beloved Japanese titles side by side
had me convinced — even before tasting the gapao rice — that
I had chosen the right place! Haha.
And then, the grand confirmation arrived:
the Gapao Rice.
Just look at this!
That “absolutely perfect” feeling!
It’s beautifully plated on a cute moz dish, full of vibrant color.
The flavor was seriously incredible!!
The spice level — adjusted off my vague request — turned out
like they had read my mind, perfectly balanced and
absolutely begging to be paired with rice!
And the fried egg on top was outstanding!
It was the perfect dish~!
From now on, when anyone asks me where to find amazing gapao rice,
I’ll point them straight to Gecko without hesitation!!
Regulars were also there enjoying themselves, and
as expected, they weren’t just drinking —
they were ordering plenty from the food menu too,
which made me even more curious to try other dishes.
The staff were extraordinarily kind,
making even a solo diner like me, who just wandered in for a meal,
feel completely at home.
I would have loved to try more dishes, but
since I was flying solo, I could only manage one,
though I’m sure everything else is just as delicious —
so I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

The shop’s name Gecko means “house lizard”, and
with little gecko-themed gifts brought in by regulars,
the charming gecko collection inside the shop just keeps growing!
Some menu items are also available for takeout!
How wonderful to enjoy these flavors at home (or your hotel)!
Phone reservations are available too — perfect if you’re interested!
Whether you’re flying solo or coming with a group,
please do stop by the relaxed and inviting Gecko
for a wonderful Asian dining experience in Kumamoto!
