A SaruKuma writer’s first-hand visit to Yamada Farm in Nishihara Village, Aso District. Includes family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Hello, travelers!
This is Ayu-mama, a writer for SaruKuma!

Today, we’re heading to Nishihara Village in Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, to visit
“Yamada Farm Milk no Sato” (Milk Village).

Coming from central Kumamoto City toward Minami-Aso, you’ll find it just before the Tawarayama Tunnel,
nestled in a lively area packed with the Moe-no-Sato roadside station and several restaurants!

The parking lot is wonderfully spacious โ€” there’s room for about 30 cars!

A big, bright red tractor greets you on arrival!

And of course, my little one couldn’t resist hopping right on! ๐Ÿ˜„

And here’s Milk no Sato โ€” the main shop building.

At the time of our visit, indoor dining was unavailable (likely due to COVID-19 precautions).

But no worries โ€” there’s a lovely outdoor terrace!
On a sunny day, it’s absolutely perfect!

Inside the shop, you’ll find an array of souvenirs and homemade dairy products on display.

Everything looks absolutely delicious!

When in doubt at Yamada Farm โ€” go straight for this!
100% Fresh Milk Soft Serve Ice Cream (ยฅ340)
It’s safe to say that most visitors come specifically for this iconic treat โ€”
it’s that legendary!

I enjoyed mine on the terrace, with sunlight filtering through the leaves overhead.
(And yes, that dappled sunlight is 100% real โ€” no filters!)
The natural sweetness of the milk shines through in every rich, creamy bite!

They also offer gelato and seasonal soft-serve flavors!
And here’s another highlight you won’t want to miss!

Ta-da!
True to its name (“Yamada Farm”), there’s a real working farm right next to the shop!
Goats, horses, and other friendly animals roam freely, and the most curious ones will come right up to greet you!
Kids will absolutely love it!
There’s also a slide and other playground equipment โ€”
making it the perfect rest stop for families on a road trip!

If you’re heading toward the Aso area, be sure to drop by Yamada Farm โ€” you won’t regret it!
