A SaruKuma writer’s firsthand visit to “Tsukemono-dokoro Kenzo,” a beloved pickle shop in Miyaji, Ichinomiya-machi, Aso City. Price guide: from 350 yen. We’ve also gathered family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
Hello, travelers!
I’m Binako, a writer for SaruKuma,
and my appetite always doubles right before bedtime!
Welcome to Tsukemono-dokoro Kenzo
Today I’m introducing a hidden gem located in
Miyaji, Ichinomiya-machi, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Tsukemono-dokoro Kenzo”
nestled inside the historic Monzen-machi shopping street.

While the shop primarily specializes in traditional Japanese pickles (tsukemono),
they also sell grilled dango skewers and whole pickled cucumbers right out front — perfect for snacking as you stroll! ♪

Step inside and you’ll find an enticing array of pickles —
every single one looks absolutely delicious! ♪
It’s hard not to want to buy a little of everything (*´Д`)

Can’t decide?
No problem — generous samples are available so you can taste before you buy! ♪
But honestly, the “samples” are anything but small! lol
They’re so generous you might struggle to choose even more! lol

You’ll also find moromi-zuke (sake-lees pickles) and kimchi on offer ♪
They make wonderful accompaniments to rice or thoughtful souvenirs to bring home ( *´艸`)

The dango skewers are slowly grilled out front,
so once you order, they’re ready to enjoy almost immediately! ♪

1 skewer: 350 yen
Choose from three flavors: Mitarashi (sweet soy glaze), Miso, or Kinako (with black sesame)
Pick your favorite and enjoy! (^^♪

Right next to it, you’ll spot the
Whole Pickled Cucumber: 150 yen
It looks irresistibly refreshing!

This time, I went with
Dango Skewer — Miso flavor: 350 yen
I’m a huge miso fan, so the choice was a no-brainer!

A-MAZ-ING.
That’s the only word that comes to mind.
The crispy outer surface paired with the soft, chewy mochi center
is sublime — and the savory miso glaze takes it over the top.
Honestly, I could eat several of these in a row.
That perfectly crispy exterior is so good it’ll put a smile right on your face.
Served fresh off the grill — warm, fragrant, and absolutely delicious.
Delicious pickles AND mouthwatering grilled dango — there’s simply no reason not to visit!
