Kakihara Park: A Tranquil Japanese-Style Park with Sprawling Lawns and Scenic Walking Paths in Hanazono, Kumamoto
2020.09.29

A Sarukuma writer visits Kakihara Park in Hanazono, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City, and shares an on-the-ground report. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly highlights, access info, and opening hours.
Hello there!
I’m Asukarando, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’d like to introduce you to
Kakihara Park,
located in Hanazono, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City.
Beyond the main sports ground, the park features spacious grass lawns,
with winding walking paths threaded between them — perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Come spring, it’s also a wonderful spot to enjoy cherry blossom viewing (hanami).
The parking lot can accommodate roughly 10 cars.
There are restrooms next to the parking lot, plus two more locations within the park itself.
So restroom access is easy throughout your visit.
Near the center of the park, you’ll find this multipurpose accessible restroom.
Heads up — this particular restroom only has traditional Japanese-style (squat) toilets.
Hand-washing stations are scattered all over the park.
With one located by each lawn area, you’ll never have to walk far to clean up.
The vending machines are located along the road outside the park
(it’s the same road you take to reach the park, so it’s easy to spot).
You’ll need to cross the street, so watch out for cars —
though when I visited, traffic was completely quiet (this may vary by time of day).
Highlights & Recommended Features
Here’s the playground equipment.
It isn’t a huge play structure, but it’s a hit with the kids —
little ones were coming and going non-stop.
The spiral slide is, as always, a crowd favorite (^-^)
Over on the neighboring lawn, you’ll spot some charmingly retro play equipment too.
Because the lawn areas are scattered throughout the park,
setting up a tent or picnic blanket
makes it feel like you’ve got your own private grass park to yourself (^-^)
It’s a great setup for keeping a close eye on toddlers,
which felt really safe and reassuring to me.
I counted them up, and there are seven separate lawn areas.
That’s a lot, isn’t it?!
The photo shows what used to be a tennis court.
The poles are still standing right where they always were.
It’s the smallest of the lawn spaces,
but a full tennis court still gives kids plenty of room to run around (^o^)
There are covered rest areas
on the lawns and one in the central area as well.
Large trees throughout the park provide plenty of shaded spots to escape the sun.
Because the park sits on elevated ground,
the views from the edge of the park are simply gorgeous.
I ended up just standing there taking it all in for a while (^^;
And here’s the visitor guidelines sign — please read and follow the park rules during your visit.
With so much greenery around, the park is also a great spot for insect hunting and nature observation.
Why not add Kakihara Park to your itinerary during the next pleasant-weather season? (^-^)/
