📌 What You’ll Learn in This Article
A Sarukuma writer visits “Works Smile,” a charming food truck that travels across Kumamoto Prefecture. Prices start from just 600 yen, and we cover family-friendly tips, access info, and operating hours.

Discover Works Smile

Hello travelers! It’s Kurubushi🦶, your Sarukuma writer.

Today I’m introducing a delightful food truck called
Works Smile.

With its adorable white-and-green design, you might not even realize it’s a food truck at first glance — but yes, it really does have wheels! It looks more like a tiny prefab cottage, and it’s hard to picture it driving down the road Σ(・ω・ノ)ノ

Must-Try Menu Items at Works Smile

The serving counter sits lower than most food trucks, which makes ordering a breeze and chatting with the friendly staff feel really natural (^^)

It’s also great for little ones who can actually see the menu themselves!
As a parent often carrying my younger child in a baby sling while holding hands with my older one (who weighs 16 kg!), a low counter is a lifesaver — no need to do an arm workout just to let my kid pick what they want♪

Here’s what’s on the menu.

The signature original creation “Works Sand” — 600 yen
Limited quantities available daily.

Other menu favorites include:
Karaage Stick — 350 yen
Salt Karaage (delicious even cold) — 500 yen
Waffles — 300 yen
Yangnyeom Chicken (Korean-style) — 600 yen
Chicken Nanban — 600 yen
Fried Takoyaki — 400 yen
Fried Takoyaki with Mentaiko — 450 yen
French Fries — 350 yen

For drinks, you’ll find:
Cola Float / Coffee Float — 300 yen each
Cola, Orange Juice, Calpis, Green Tea — 150 yen each
Lemon Squash, Blue Hawaii Soda, Coffee — 200 yen each, and more…
From Japanese fried chicken to fries, waffles, takoyaki, and a wide drink selection — they really do offer something for everyone.
If you’ve ever had to queue up at multiple food trucks during lunchtime, you’ll appreciate how convenient it is to find this much variety in one place. Perfect for families!

And here they are — the Works Sand and Smile Sand!
These are house-original creations sold in limited quantities every day.
This time, I went with the Works Sand.

Curious about what was inside, I cut it in half to take a peek…

Hmm? What is it? A croquette? Wait, what?

One bite in, and I was even more puzzled.

I admit it wasn’t very polite, but I started pulling it apart to figure it out — and discovered
the bun is incredibly unique! A texture I’d never experienced before — a totally new culinary discovery!

If I had to describe it: imagine a Chinese-style steamed meat bun (nikuman) tightly compressed and then deep-fried. That’s the closest comparison I can think of.

The bun itself has tons of flavor and an unforgettable texture, and it’s absolutely delicious!!

The first bite was pure confusion, but once my brain caught up with my taste buds, I was hooked!

It was so good that I ended up wrapping half in plastic to enjoy later…
The flavors are bold enough that it tastes great even when cold.

The Smile Sand was sold out during my visit, but I’m dying to try that one too — I bet it might be a sweet version!

I also picked up an order of fries.
They’re cut into chunky wedges with a fluffy, comforting texture — exactly what you want.

And then the waffle! There’s nothing quite like a freshly made, warm waffle.
It’s on a completely different level from the prepackaged ones at the supermarket — pure deliciousness.

I was busy thinking about how amazing it tasted when my daughter polished hers off in seconds.

If you have hungry kids, sharing one waffle between them might cause a battle!

You know how serious food disputes can get!

Honestly, I wanted just a little more myself! (laughs)

On another visit, I tried the coffee float!

Iced coffee paired with sweet vanilla ice cream — the perfect treat to cool you down after a hot afternoon at the park.

With such a wide menu and plenty of drinks, you can easily grab lunch for the whole family at this single food truck.

You can find their daily location and schedule on their Instagram page.

If you spot them somewhere in Kumamoto, definitely stop by and give them a try♪
