Introducing Otani no Yu

Hello there!
Lately I’ve been all about the joys of plain hot water—
it’s Binako, your SaruKuma writer!

Today I’d like to introduce you to
Harumizu, Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District in Kumamoto Prefecture, home of
“Otani no Yu.”

This is a hot spring I’ve been visiting since I was a teenager.
There’s a large public bath here too, but today I want to introduce you to the family baths!

Parking is available on-site.
It often fills up because the place gets quite popular,
so I recommend giving yourself plenty of time when you visit.

Step inside, and you’re greeted by an impressive display of fresh local vegetables.
Alongside the veggies, there’s also fruit and prepared side dishes, so many visitors pick up something to take home after their bath.
(Some folks even drop by just for the vegetables!)

There’s also a restaurant inside.
With bath and food covered in one place,
this is the perfect spot for a “day off from cooking and chores!”

They also offer takeout.
The variety of bento boxes here is seriously tempting.

First, purchase a bath ticket and check in at the reception desk.
Cold water and tea are self-service right next to reception.
Ahhh, what a thoughtful touch…

Why We Love Otani no Yu

There are three family bath rooms to choose from: 【Momiji (Maple)】【Tsubaki (Camellia)】and 【Take (Bamboo)】.

This time, we were shown to 【Tsubaki no Yu (Camellia Bath)】.

The room is cozy in size but spotlessly clean.

My son is now four years old, but back when he was still a baby, they kindly lent us a child-sized float ring
so he could bob happily in the water with me. I still remember it fondly.
Offering kids’ chairs and float rings as rentals is such a lifesaver for parents.

Even the air conditioning is free—no extra charge.
Ahh, so thoughtful (again)!
That means you can step into the changing room comfortably year-round, summer or winter.

And alongside the hairdryer, you’ll find these little bottles of water in the basket.
Yes, they’re complimentary. Free of charge!
Is it really okay to be this generous?! I’m honestly impressed.

The bathing area is indoor-only, but the washing area is spacious and easy to use.

Shampoo, conditioner, and body soap are all provided, so even a spur-of-the-moment “let’s go to the hot spring!” trip is no problem at all.

From the bathtub, you can spot a charming frog family ornament.
My son was absolutely thrilled by it.
By the way, he’s the one who took this photo. Pretty good shot, right?

Family-friendly through and through—the 【Family Bath】
A hot spring I’ve loved for years thanks to its consistently great service.
Be sure to drop by and experience it for yourself!
