Introducing restaurant+cafe Iroha

Hello, fellow travelers!
[SaruKuma] writer Cho-san here!

Today I’m excited to introduce
[restaurant+cafe Iroha]
located in Ozu Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture!
Many local foodies know this spot as a famous shaved ice (kakigori) destination.
After a long wait, I finally got to try it for myself โ€” and I couldn’t wait to share!

This place is honestly
one of the top-tier kakigori shops in all of Kumamoto Prefecture!
By day, it’s also famous for its kakinoha-zushi (persimmon-leaf sushi) lunches,
but on this visit, I came specifically for the cafe time starting at 14:00 to enjoy their legendary kakigori.
If shaved ice is your goal, take note:
you’ll need to make a phone reservation starting at 10:00 AM the same day.
(According to information at the time of my visit,
through the end of September 2020 it was completely reservation-only!)

And let me tell you โ€” the phone lines are seriously competitive

I called right at 10:00 sharp,
but with so many other people trying to book at the same time,
it took quite a while to get through!

Based on my own experience and observations… (haha)
On weekends and holidays, your window is roughly until 10:20,
and on weekdays, reservations often fill up by around 10:35.
(It varies day by day,
but hopefully this gives you a useful reference!)

(My sheer determination for kakigori paid off… haha)
Finally got through at 10:16 and successfully booked,
providing the number of guests, kakigori orders, and our name.
The slots filled up in a flash โ€”
I managed to grab a 16:30 reservation!

Since I went on a Sunday, I really did
slip in just under the wire!

It honestly felt like trying to score tickets
for a sold-out concert… haha

For the latest reservation info, check the shop’s
Instagram Stories,
Facebook Stories, and
Twitter, where updates are posted regularly.

Also, please don’t call before 10:00 AM โ€”
reservations won’t be accepted before that time,
so be sure to follow the schedule!

The shop sits in a peaceful, nature-rich setting,
with sweeping rice paddies stretching out in front of it.

At the entrance, you’re welcomed by a magnificent single-plank wooden sign โ€” truly impressive.

Parking is limited, so the shop kindly asks:
“For groups of up to 4, please carpool in a single vehicle.”
Even before stepping inside,
the exterior is absolutely charming.
It’s a beautifully restored traditional Japanese kominka (old folk house) โ€” perfectly atmospheric!

Heads up โ€” the entrance doorway is quite low.
Duck under the noren curtain carefully so you don’t bump your head!
(Even at 155cm tall, I had to crouch,
so taller visitors should be extra careful!)

Inside, you’ll find a spacious doma (earthen floor area),
where you remove your shoes and step up onto the raised tatami section.

In the center of the room are table seats,
a tatami zashiki room in the back,
and counter seating facing the inner garden.

If you’re visiting with small children
and prefer the tatami zashiki area,
please mention the number of children when making your reservation.

I was seated at the counter, and
the view was absolutely stunning!!
The atmosphere makes you want to slow down and just relax.
Even a simple glass of water somehow looks picture-perfect! haha

Recommended Menu Items at restaurant+cafe Iroha

The menu is labeled August’s Kakigori Selection,
but flavors may change depending on fruit availability.

Some flavors are so popular there’s a
limit of one per group.
Toppings can be added on, and there’s also a drink menu.

And here’s what I ordered: this beauty!
Grape Special โ€” 1,120 yen

The towering presentation deserves
full marks for artistry
โ€” it’s an absolute showstopper!
On top sit gorgeous Shine Muscat grapes,
and the white element? Cream cheese! What a unique twist!
The grape syrup is incredibly fresh,
with just the right amount of real fruit pulp. Heavenly!

The portion is so generous, I worried it might topple over โ€”
but it disappeared so fast I didn’t have time to worry.
It’s that delicious!

Mid-bite surprise:
deep inside, like buried treasure,
massive Kyoho grapes were nestled inside!
And not just one โ€” three of them!!!

These were seriously the biggest Kyoho grapes
I’ve ever encountered in my life!

As a former middle-school table tennis player,
they were practically the size of ping-pong balls.

Sorry for the half-eaten photos…
Beyond the three Kyoho grapes, there was also grape jelly!

By the time you reach this point, the ice has started to melt a bit,
but the grape syrup is so good it transforms into
a delicious grape juice โ€” which is honestly amazing in its own right!

To any fellow grape lovers reading this:
if the Grape Special is on the menu, you absolutely have to try it!!

And here’s another stunner:
Peach Royal Milk Tea โ€” 1,020 yen

Against the soft pastel tones,
the vivid pink really pops!
This one comes with fresh peach sauce on the side.

It’s delicious on its own,
but you can also drizzle on the special peach sauce for a luxurious bonus kick!
And of course, hidden inside this Peach Royal Milk Tea
were juicy slices of fresh peach!

Both kakigori were piled so high
they looked like they might spill over โ€”
but somehow, before I knew it, both were completely gone.

With many summer events being more limited these days,
why not plan your own little adventure around
going out for incredible kakigori?

The first step is the phone reservation โ€”
but once you secure your spot,
it’s like landing a ticket to an exclusive event!
Make it a memorable summer experience! โ™ชโ™ชโ™ช
