Welcome to Sato no Champon

Hello travelers! It’s Binako,
your occasional writer at Sarukuma.

Today I’m taking you to a hidden local gem in Kenkun, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City โ€”
Sato no Champon.

You can tell from this shot that it was an evening visit โ€” the warm glow makes it feel even more inviting.

There’s room for 2โ€“3 cars right out front.
The lot is shared with the neighboring shop, so be sure to park as close to Sato no Champon as possible to keep things smooth for everyone.

The interior has that wonderfully nostalgic small-town diner feel.
It’s counter seating only, so this is a perfect spot for a solo meal or a relaxed bite with one or two travel buddies rather than a big group.

Look at that!
Shelves of manga lined up, just like the neighborhood eateries I loved as a kid.
It instantly took me back to grabbing my pocket money and heading out for a meal with my siblings โ€” a quintessentially Japanese childhood memory you can experience right here.

Must-Try Menu Items at Sato no Champon

Here’s the menu.
It all starts with the signature Champon (730 yen) โ€” a Kyushu-born noodle dish loaded with vegetables, seafood, and pork in a rich broth. You’ll also find Yakisoba (680 yen), Sara Udon (730 yen), and a generous selection of noodle dishes and set meals.

When I visited, the summer-only Hiyashi Chuka (chilled ramen, 830 yen) was also on the menu.
This refreshing cold noodle dish is surprisingly hard to find in many Japanese restaurants.
Well, you’ll find it right here!

I came with my child, so we shared the
“Yaki-Champon Gyoza Set Meal (820 yen)”.
Just let the owner know and they’ll happily provide a small plate for kids to share โ€” a really thoughtful family-friendly touch.

Behold the mountain of vegetables โ€” piled sky-high!
The noodles sit on a sizzling hot iron plate below, and you have to resist the urge to flip them just yet.

First, dig into that fresh, crunchy mound of vegetables to balance out the indulgence to come.
The cabbage and bean sprouts stay crisp and juicy, soaking up the savory sauce so beautifully
that you’ll already be reaching for rice before the noodles even appear.

And now โ€” it’s time. Flip those noodles!

The result? Glorious, golden okoge (crispy charred noodles)โ€ฆ!!!
Just seeing this transformation is enough to send my smile straight through the roof.

(The gyoza and rice disappeared straight into my son’s stomach, by the way.)

Yaki-champon (the pan-fried version) is a totally different experience from the classic soup champon โ€” that “yaki” (pan-fried) technique lets the sauce cling to every strand of noodle.
It’s rich without being heavy, and you’ll find yourself wanting to keep eating, bite after bite.

It’s the kind of irresistible, lingering flavor that has you planning your return visit before you’ve even finished your meal.
