Introducing 3-ji no Donut

Hello travelers! I’m Asukarando, a writer for Sarukuma, your local guide to Kumamoto.

Today I’m taking you to Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to visit
【3-ji no Donut (3 O’Clock Donut)】.

Here’s the exciting news! These legendary donuts — once only available at local marche markets — finally got their own brick-and-mortar shop in December 2024 (*^.^*)
Many loyal fans have already lined up before opening to grab a box!

Step through the simple, stylish noren curtain at the entrance and you’ll be greeted by a large refrigerator!
Inside, those famous crunchy donuts await (^3^)/

※Photos used with the kind permission of the shop.
“We don’t chase trends,” the owner says — and these signature crunchy donuts are absolutely unmissable.

And that unique shape is just adorable, isn’t it? (*^.^*)

The counter is lined with fluffy donuts ready to greet you ☆
Note: during reservation-only eat-in hours, these may already be sold out, so plan ahead.

Every donut is made with carefully chosen seasonal ingredients from Kumamoto and Yamaga:
・Kumamoto-grown wheat flour
・Unrefined cane sugar
・100% natural sea salt
・Yotsuba butter
・Free-range eggs
・Domestic rice bran oil
・Aluminum-free baking powder
・Matcha from Koyama Tea Shop (Yamaga)
・Tofu from Mamekaori (Yamaga)

Here’s the drink menu (^^)

There’s a play area for kids, too!
Not just toddlers — even elementary-aged children were having a blast (^-^)v

That’s no surprise!
The owner Yuki-san is a certified Toy Coordinator® and personally selected these German-made toys, designed to nurture children’s imagination and creativity.
Kids might be moving the dolls one moment and stacking blocks into a balance tower the next.
With no fixed way to play, children can lose themselves in free, imaginative fun (*^^)v
There’s also an eat-in space.
The minimalist white interior makes the donuts pop beautifully ☆

A pillowy donut wrapped in candy-style sugar coating!

The decadent diplomat cream — a marriage of whipped cream and custard — pairs perfectly with the soft, moist donut, sending pure happiness across your taste buds!

Cream on the nose and the biggest smiles — the kids couldn’t be happier (^-^)v

The 3do Cruller is crispy outside, soft and chewy inside — a one-of-a-kind texture I’d never experienced in a donut before!

Personally, it reminded me of a French canelé in texture (^^)
It’s fried fresh after you order, so it arrives warm and absolutely delicious ☆

Kids’ drinks come in spill-resistant lidded cups — such a thoughtful touch for families!

Savoring ‘3-ji no Donut’ fills you with happiness, and watching the kids next to me beam as they ate with both hands was pure heart-warming joy (^-^)

3-ji no Donut: The Story Behind It

I sat down with owner Yuki Yokote-san to hear about her donuts, the charming origin of the shop’s name, and how the brick-and-mortar location came to be (*^^)v

What inspired you to start a donut shop?

It started with food education when my child was about a year and a half old.
I was new to the area, raising my child essentially alone with no one to lean on.
When I noticed my son copying everything I did, I thought, “Let’s try doing and making everything together!” That’s how our food education journey began.
It started with simple carrot donuts using pancake mix, but my desire to “give my child the taste of real food” led me to strip ingredients down to the essentials. That became the foundation of the 3do donut.

I started food education with my own child around age two — cooking and baking together. It can be challenging, but it’s so rewarding ♫
“Wanting to give kids the very best” is something almost every parent shares.
With such carefully chosen ingredients, 3-ji no Donut is exactly the kind of treat I’d want to share with my children.

Thank you so much!
I wanted to make delicious donuts for my child using as many domestic, Kumamoto-grown, and especially Yamaga-grown ingredients as possible. The shop name ‘3-ji no Donut’ (3 O’Clock Donut) reflects my wish for everyone — kids and adults — to enjoy a happy moment during their afternoon snack time at 3 o’clock.

3 o’clock snack time… even as adults, it brings a little flutter of excitement ♪ What a wonderful, warm meaning behind such a charming name. Watching the kids smile while eating today made me so happy too.
Could you tell us more about how the actual storefront came to be?

Of course!
We founded this business with the mission of being “a donut shop that connects people and places.”
We thought hard about the challenges we faced and how we could contribute to revitalizing Yamaga. We launched a crowdfunding campaign and finally opened in December 2024.

“Connecting people and places” — what a meaningful vision.
What specific challenges and revitalization goals were you hoping to address?

Our personal challenges were:
①Just two of us handled everything from sourcing to selling — so unexpected events like a child’s sudden fever could throw the whole operation off.
②Our equipment limited production volume, meaning we couldn’t meet customer demand for more donuts.
③Without a physical store, anyone outside the social-media generation didn’t know how to buy from us, which caused inconvenience.

As for our hopes for the local community:
①There aren’t enough workplaces where parents can enjoy both work and child-rearing while pursuing their dreams (especially when it feels awkward to leave work for a child’s fever).
②The Yamaga Buzen Kaido area has many vacant tenant spaces that need businesses to revive them.
③Local businesses need stronger visibility — Kumamoto and Yamaga are home to many wonderful artisans and producers, and we want more people to know about them.

I had no idea such a beloved donut shop carried so many serious challenges behind the scenes.
Better workplaces for working mothers is something the whole country needs to address.
Your love for Yamaga really comes through too.

Thank you.
Thanks to wonderful crowdfunding support, we opened our doors and now tackle these challenges every day.

①A workplace that supports working moms
We welcomed six new staff members, most of them parents themselves. Behind the scenes, we line up everyone’s smartphones — if a school or daycare calls, the parent can answer immediately and rush off saying “Be right back!”
We believe building a foundation where moms can thrive at work creates smiles at home, in the workplace, and for our customers.

(Lining up the phones…) What a thoughtful approach!
So many mothers feel torn between rushing to pick up their child and worrying about troubling their workplace. With an environment like this, working and parenting can both be enjoyable!

Exactly.
And second:
②Increased donut production, more open days, online store, and eat-in service
We’ve expanded production and opening days, but we still keep customers waiting and sometimes sell out. Still, by launching reservation-only eat-in and an online shop, we can now deliver our 3do donuts to far more people than before.

Honestly, I wanted to come visit much sooner, but with a small child in tow, lining up was tough. The reservation-only eat-in is such a relief for families with little ones, and for travelers coming from far away to Yamaga!

We hear that often, so we’re really glad.
③Revitalizing the Yamaga Buzen Kaido district
Opening the store taught us a lot — including unexpected difficulties. But hearing customers say things like “We visited the nearby ashiyu (foot bath) too” or “We stayed overnight and tried local restaurants in Yamaga” is so heartwarming. We’ll keep our promise as “a donut shop that connects people and places,” sharing the nature, culture, farmers, and producers of Kumamoto and Yamaga through every single donut.

Thank you so much for sharing such heartfelt stories — about how your donuts wrap warmth not just around your customers, but also your staff and the entire Yamaga community!
Now I truly understand why you say “we don’t follow trends.”
Here’s to many more smiles and a brighter Yamaga, thanks to 3-ji no Donut!

So, what did you think?
It was a truly moving experience to hear the owner’s heartfelt vision for ‘3-ji no Donut’ (*^.^*)
