A Sarukuma writer visits Karikusa Central Park in Minami-ku, Kumamoto City. We’ve gathered everything you need to know — family-friendly highlights, access, and opening hours.
Hello, travelers!
This is Rikotama, writer for Sarukuma!
Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem located in Karikusa, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City:
Karikusa Central Park (Karikusa Chuo Koen).

The park is conveniently located right next to JR Nishi-Kumamoto Station and the KKT Housing Exhibition Center — easy to reach if you’re exploring Kumamoto by train!

While there’s no car parking, you’ll find two bicycle parking areas — perfect if you’ve rented a bike to explore the city!

The restrooms are surprisingly clean and well-maintained, including a multi-purpose accessible toilet!

There’s also a drinking water fountain — handy on hot Kumamoto summer days!

You’ll find plenty of benches around the park — both covered and uncovered — making it a great spot to relax with a takeaway snack.

There’s also one vending machine inside the park, plus two more just outside — so staying hydrated is never a problem!

Here’s a fun bonus for train enthusiasts: because the park is so close to Nishi-Kumamoto Station, you can sometimes catch a glimpse of the Shinkansen (bullet train) zipping by! ♪
Kids who happened to spot one were absolutely thrilled (*^â–½^*)
Why You’ll Love Karikusa Central Park

Thanks to its generous size, this park boasts not one, not two, but THREE exciting combination playground structures!

The play equipment is perfect for toddlers all the way up to mid-elementary-school-aged children!

With three structures spread out, kids never have to crowd around just one piece of equipment (*^-^*)

There are also charming spring-rider toys designed for the youngest visitors!

And there’s a spacious sandbox too… but wait, that’s not all!

Believe it or not — there’s actually a bouldering wall here too!
This was such a delightful surprise! (=゚ω゚)ノ
Climb on the playground, run around the open lawn for tag or bug-catching, then break a sweat on the bouldering wall —
there’s truly something for everyone at Karikusa Central Park. Highly recommended for active travelers and families! (≧▽≦)
☆ Bonus tip: AEON Town shopping mall is within walking distance, so you can easily combine a park visit with a shopping trip ☆
