Hello, travelers!

This is Ayu-mama, a writer for “Sarukuma”!

Today I’m introducing a hidden gem located
inside the Kenkun Shopping Street in Wakaba, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City:
【Kenkun Machinaka Library — Yotte Kanne】
“Yotte Kanne” is a community facility located inside the Kenkun Shopping Street, dedicated to local revitalization. Anyone is welcome to use it, completely free of charge!

The name is a clever play on the local Kumamoto dialect — “yotte ikan ne?” means “Why don’t you drop by?” Combine that with “kan” (the character for building), and you get “Yotte Kanne” — a warm, inviting invitation in name form. A perfect bit of local wordplay!
Coming in from the streetcar stop side, you’ll find it on the right.
The Marushoku supermarket is right across the way, so it’s easy to spot.

Inside, there’s a reception desk with a friendly staff member always on hand — so you can feel right at home!

It also doubles as a taxi waiting area. The staff can call a taxi for you on the spot — a real lifesaver for international visitors who may not be familiar with Japanese taxi apps.
Comfortable seating means you can rest while you wait. Whether you’ve picked up more shopping bags than expected or your feet are tired from sightseeing, it’s incredibly handy when you suddenly need a ride!
Opening hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

The facility also offers a variety of local information services,
and serves as a community gathering spot for residents and visitors alike!

There’s also a clean restroom inside — perfect for a quick break during your shopping street adventure!

Why You Should Visit

The star attraction is this charming little library!
The shelves are packed with picture books and Japanese manga that will delight kids and manga fans of all ages.
And the best part? Everything is completely free to read!!!
Some titles are even available for borrowing.
Beyond classic manga volumes, you’ll even find weekly manga magazines! The selection rivals what you’d find at a Japanese manga café — and here it’s all free.

There are plenty of books for adults too.Just a few simple rules to keep in mind when using the space.
Protective droplet shields are installed for safety,
and my son absolutely loves this place — on this visit, he was completely absorbed in a “Where’s Wally?” book (laughs)!

Throughout our visit, families and elementary school kids kept popping in to read — it’s a true neighborhood favorite!
