Today we’re heading to Nonojima, Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to explore “Bentenyama Park”.

Just as the name suggests, this is a park nestled within a mountain (^-^)/

The parking lot appears right after you turn in at the entrance sign.
You can also drive further inside.

Restrooms are conveniently located right next to the parking area.

Wood-carved style restrooms can be found near the playground area, but please note these are Japanese-style (squat) toilets.

A handwashing station is right next to it.

Vending machines are also stationed near the parking lot.

A walking course encircles the mountain,
and we spotted plenty of locals enjoying their stroll on the day we visited.

Highlights & Recommended Spots

First up, we tackled
the loooooong staircase that stretches up from the parking area!

Oh, to be young again! (^^;

My son raced right up the steps without breaking a sweat (^-^)

I almost gave up halfway, but with a bit of self-encouragement,
I managed to make it to the top ☆

And waiting at the top — an observation deck! ☆

It opens up into a wide plaza,
perfect for catching your breath after the climb ☆

And of course, the views are absolutely spectacular! (^-^)/

Next, we headed down the opposite staircase to explore the grass field (^-^)

It’s so spacious that my son looked tiny standing in the middle ☆

Several large benches dot the field.
Looks like a perfect spot for a leisurely nap (^-^)

After playing for a bit, we continued down the slope toward the playground area.

There was a paved concrete path, but the forest trail looked like a quicker shortcut — so we took it.

We even spotted some chestnuts on the ground! (^o^)

And here’s the playground area! ☆

These are all wooden play structures (^-^)/

There are even tall climbing structures (^-^)

You can ring a bell once you reach the top — my son climbed up over and over again to ring it!

There are also smaller slides for younger children, so kids of any age can find something to enjoy.

This time we hiked up and down stairs and trails,
but don’t worry — if you take the walking path from the parking lot,
you’ll arrive at the playground area in no time at all (^o^)

Right next to the parking lot, there’s a charming little stand selling fresh, locally grown vegetables (^-^)

The cabbages and Chinese cabbages are surprisingly huge! (^-^)

Chinese cabbage: 130 yen

Cabbage: 100 yen

Plus turnips, carrots, cucumbers, and more — all just 100 yen each!

Be sure to bring some coins along on your park outing! (^-^)/

This nature-rich mountain park is bursting with adventure
and excitement for kids of all ages ☆
