Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Ayu-mama, writer for “Sarukuma”!

Today we’re introducing a peaceful spot located in
Kashima Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture:
Ukishima Waterside Park.
Look for the Ukishima Shrine signpost along Prefectural Route 226 β€” that’s your entrance!
Cross the small bridge and the parking lot comes into view almost immediately.
The parking area is nice and spacious.
You’ll find restrooms,
a traditional Japanese gazebo (azumaya),
a drinking fountain,
and benches scattered throughout.
There’s even this charming monument!

Why You Should Visit

This park was developed around Ukishima, an area officially designated as one of Japan’s Heisei-era Top 100 Famous Waters. And believe it or not β€” what looks like a serene lake is actually a spring-fed pond!
The water is pure spring water, and incredibly,
about 150,000 tons gush forth every single day!
No wonder the water is so crystal clear!
The pond is home to plenty of carp and other fish, making it a popular spot among local anglers. On the day of our visit, several fishing enthusiasts were already enjoying the catch!
A walking path winds through the park, perfect for a leisurely stroll along the water’s edge.
Across the water, you can spot Ukishima Shrine (affectionately known as “Ukishima-san”).
A shrine standing serenely on the water’s edge!
It’s truly a magical, otherworldly sight!
Ukishima Shrine is famously known as a shrine of good relationships and matchmaking β€” perfect for couples and singles alike!
Pay your respects at the shrine and then unwind at Ukishima Waterside Park β€” the ideal combo!

The peaceful waterside lets you forget the noise of daily life and soothes the soul.
