A Sarukuma writer pays a hands-on visit to “Minami Aso Thomas Farm” in Nakamatsu, Minamiaso Village, Aso District. We’ve also packed in family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

About the Farm

Hello there!
This is Ayu-mama, writer for “Sarukuma.”

Today I’d love to introduce you to a charming spot tucked away in Nakamatsu, Minamiaso Village, Aso District:
【Minami Aso Thomas Farm】.

This is a tourist farm where you can enjoy strawberry picking, all-you-can-eat strawberries, and pick up fresh berries to take home.

My son is absolutely strawberry-obsessed — when he picks sweets, ice cream, or cake, he almost always goes for the ‘strawberry flavor’!!

So my little strawberry lover and I headed out for a strawberry picking experience, and I can’t wait to share it with you!

A roadside banner reading ‘Strawberry Picking’ makes the farm easy to spot.
It’s also a stone’s throw from 【Shirakawa Suigen Spring】, which we’ve featured before — an area blessed with crystal-clear, abundant water.

【Shirakawa Suigen Spring】More than just a water source! A famous spot for surprisingly accurate ○○…?!《Shirakawa, Minamiaso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto》

The parking area is right beside the banner.

The reception desk is inside the greenhouse — be sure to check in here first.

These are the prices for the strawberry picking experience with all-you-can-eat strawberries on the spot (40 minutes).
(Note: prices vary by season and age.)

‘All-you-can-eat strawberry picking’ tends to feel a little pricey, doesn’t it?!
But here at 【Minami Aso Thomas Farm】, the rates are wonderfully reasonable!

This time, instead of the all-you-can-eat option, we chose the pick-and-purchase course — picking the berries and paying only for what we collected.
With this plan, you pay by the gram (market price) for whatever you harvest.

Recommended Experience

Now, let’s get the strawberry picking started!!!

You’re handed an adorable strawberry-patterned basket already fitted with a take-home box. Just drop your freshly picked berries straight in!

The greenhouse is overflowing with strawberries!!!

Strawberries everywhere you turn — left, right, plenty in every direction!!!

The greenhouse is wrapped in the sweet aroma of fresh strawberries —
just standing inside puts a smile on your face.

While I was busy admiring the berries, my son was already busily picking away.

Each strawberry is impressively plump and large.

Look how many strawberries we managed to harvest~~(^^)

The pink take-home box is unbelievably cute, too!

The taste? Incredibly sweet and bursting with juice!
The berries are grown with reduced pesticides, so parents can feel confident letting kids enjoy them, too.

And if you’re craving strawberries but don’t have time for the full picking experience, no worries!

Just across the road, there’s a direct-sale stand selling fresh strawberries.
It’s super popular — cars were rolling up one after another, with everyone leaving with a box of berries.

On the day we visited, an adorable elementary-school-aged girl was minding the shop!
When I asked about the strawberry picking prices, she answered confidently,
and the moment I said I wanted to try the experience, she ran off to fetch the family — I was genuinely touched.

What a wonderful little shopkeeper she is!!!

With a friendly owner and a fantastic young helper, 【Minami Aso Thomas Farm】 is the perfect place for a strawberry picking adventure —
why not give it a try yourself?!
