Welcome to Elmond
Hello, travelers!
This is Igaguri, writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to a hidden gem in Nagasu Town, Tamana District, Kumamoto Prefecture —
“Elmond” (えるもんど).

When locals talk about the go-to izakaya in Nagasu Town, Elmond is the name that always comes up! (^^♪

Even at lunchtime, the parking lot is often completely full — a sure sign of how popular it is!
You’ll find Elmond right next to Tamiya Jiro Internal Medicine Clinic, with Rocky Super Store and the Nagasu Town Hall just down the road — handy landmarks for visitors.

So what’s the inside like? Step in and you’ll find a warm, welcoming atmosphere…

Here’s the counter seating — perfect for solo travelers.

There are also semi-private table seats that feel like your own little nook…

…plus traditional Japanese tatami (zashiki) seating. The space is surprisingly roomy! (^^)/
Must-Try Menu at Elmond

The star of the show is the Select Lunch menu — proudly displayed right outside the entrance.
Today’s main dish lineup:
Tai no Aradaki (simmered sea bream)
Nikujaga (Japanese beef and potato stew)
Horse tendon and daikon stew
Country-style simmered eggplant
Chicken Nanban (fried chicken with tartar sauce)
Stir-fried pork and cabbage, Chinese-style
White fish fry
Stuffed bell peppers
Choose any 2 from the list — all for just 1,000 yen!
Which two would you pick? ( ̄ー ̄)

I had my heart set on the simmered sea bream, but it had sold out — so I went with teriyaki yellowtail (buri) and Chicken Nanban instead!

The yellowtail came out thick, glossy, and absolutely delicious — the teriyaki glaze was on point!

The Chicken Nanban was wonderfully tender, served on a clever bed of fresh lettuce that balances out the rich tartar sauce. It vanished from my plate in no time!

The set also includes small side dishes — macaroni salad and Japanese pickles (oshinko).

And here’s the kicker: free refills on miso soup and rice!
You’ll leave completely full — all for just 1,000 yen!
No wonder this place is such a local favorite!

Since the place started its life as a cafe, the menu is packed with variety — Japanese set meals (teishoku), noodles, rice dishes, and even bread & pizza.

They even have parfaits! (*’▽’*)
By day it’s a cozy cafe; by night it transforms into a lively izakaya — bringing a wonderful energy to little Nagasu Town.
According to local word-of-mouth, the basashi (raw horse meat sashimi — a Kumamoto specialty) is especially fantastic in the evenings, and the shirako (cod milt) tempura comes highly recommended too! (((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))
Nagasu may be a small town tucked between Tamana and Arao, but it’s full of foodie surprises. While you’re in the area, also check out:
“Soba Cafe Le Prier”
“Kumamoto Champon Ishibashi”
Both are wonderful local hideaways!
Be sure to add them to your itinerary! (^_-)-☆
