Ogawa Pan: An Introduction to the Shop

Hello, travelers! It’s Maru, your SaruKuma writer 🙂🙃

Today I’m taking you to Shiranui-cho in Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to a sweet little bakery called “Ogawa Pan”.
This is a wholesome, body-friendly bakery that uses no eggs or milk—just naturally fermented dough and carefully chosen ingredients 💙

You’ll find the shop right along National Route 266. The photo cuts it off a bit (sorry!), but the bright red mailbox by the entrance is your landmark.

And here’s the best part—just behind the shop, the sea opens up right in front of you!

The cute blue-and-white building looks gorgeous against the ocean backdrop. Parking is conveniently located right next to the shop.

The interior is small and cozy. On my visit, there were about 20 different breads neatly arranged in wooden boxes. Just point to what you want, and the friendly staff will pick it up for you.

Pricing is refreshingly simple and easy to follow. Considering the high-quality, carefully selected ingredients, the prices are surprisingly reasonable (^O^)

Ogawa Pan: Recommended Menu Items

Now, let’s take a look at all the lovely breads on offer 😆😆

The shop’s number one bestseller is the melon pan, made with luxurious Yotsuba butter. (For guests with allergies, the staff mentioned that a butter-free version can be made with advance reservation.)

Next up, the adorable-looking renkon (lotus root) bread—another signature item the shop is proud of (^O^)

Then there’s the black anpan (sweet red bean bun), ikinari pan (filled with sweet potato and red bean paste), and a savory salt bread.

You’ll also spot apple bread, apple cinnamon bread, and pumpkin bread—a lineup that’s sure to delight 👧🏻💗

Walnut bread, raisin bread, and more—every single one uses thoughtfully sourced ingredients, not just in the dough but in the fillings too ✨

It’s the kind of bread you can give your kids without a second thought 👦👧

Ogawa Pan: Tasting Time!

This is what I picked up! With the weather so beautiful, I took my haul to the seaside nearby for a little impromptu picnic.

The famous melon pan!
It’s a universal crowd-pleaser—kids and adults alike adore it. With no unnecessary additives, the flavor is simple yet wonderfully indulgent.
The cookie-crust top is delightfully crisp 😍

And here’s the renkon (lotus root) bread!

The crunchy lotus root kinpira (Japanese-style braised vegetable) pairs beautifully with the bread (^O^) It’s generously stuffed and surprisingly filling. Honestly, this one stole my heart!

This one is the seasonal apple bread 🍎 Lightly sweet apple chunks add the perfect accent—gentle and comforting.

And the irresistibly cute teddy bear bun 🐻 (filled with cream)
The cream is light and never feels heavy—just right for little ones ✨

Even the cookies are this charming 💛 Lots of bear shapes everywhere (^^)

Every bite carries the gentle aroma of wheat—warm, rustic, and deeply comforting. These are the kinds of breads that warm your heart as well as your tummy 😍 If you’re traveling through Kumamoto, please drop by!
