2024.09.02

A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand visit to “Ramen Yu” in Tomiai, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
Introducing Ramen Yu
Hello travelers! This is Suno, a writer for [Sarukuma].
Today we’re heading to Tomiai, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City to visit
[Ramen Yu].
You’ll spot the bright red sign right across from Nishi-Kumamoto Hospital — easy to find!
If you’re driving along National Route 3 toward Uto, just look out the right side of your car.
And good news for foodies: two other Sarukuma favorites, “Backerei Glück” and “Ramen-dokoro Tenshin,” are right nearby.
Ramen Yu’s parking lot has space for 7 cars — handy for travelers driving in from out of town.

The shop has a double-door entrance with a waiting area, so even if there’s a queue you can sit comfortably and browse the menu while you wait. A nice touch!
Inside, you’ll find 4 counter seats and a few tables.
Toward the back, there are two traditional Japanese tatami-style raised seating areas (“koagari”) — perfect for families with kids who want a little extra space.
The restroom is conveniently located right by the register.
Ramen Yu’s Recommended Menu
Ramen Yu’s menu is neatly divided into noodles, rice dishes, single items, and drinks — clean and easy to navigate (all prices include tax).
Flip the menu over and you’ll find the popular set meals (“teishoku”).
Lunchtime is always packed, but tables turn quickly so the wait usually isn’t too bad.
Most regulars order one of these set meals!
My personal favorite is the Ramen Set Meal — ¥950,
which comes with ramen, karaage (Japanese fried chicken), rice, and pickles.
Here’s something special: in Kumamoto, soy sauce-based ramen is actually pretty rare — most shops serve heavy tonkotsu (pork bone) broth. So if you prefer something lighter, or if rich pork broth isn’t your thing, this is the bowl for you!
Just look at that gorgeous, clear broth! It’s incredibly delicious.
The flavor is mellow, with that gentle soy sauce warmth that’s so easy to love.
The well-seasoned chashu pork pairs beautifully with the delicate, perfectly textured thin noodles.
Children’s tableware is available on request — great for traveling families.
And rice refills are free, so you can easily share with little ones!
Another crowd favorite is the Sweet & Sour Pork Set Meal — ¥980.
It comes loaded with sweet and sour pork (subuta), karaage, a fresh vegetable side, soup, rice, and pickles.
The thick, sweet-and-tangy sauce coats every piece of pork and vegetable beautifully — pure comfort food joy!
And the best part? This sweet and sour pork set even includes freshly fried karaage on the side!
The piping-hot karaage is bursting with soy sauce and garlic flavor, and the portion is generous (you get 3 pieces!).
The sweet and sour pork, the karaage, and even the pickles all pair perfectly with rice — you’ll be reaching for refills.
Takeout is available too, and many travelers stop by for dinner on their way back from a day trip to Amakusa.
If you’re craving a light, soy sauce-based ramen during your Kumamoto adventure, definitely make Ramen Yu a stop on your itinerary!
