About Bäckerei Glück

Hello travelers! This is Suno, a writer for [Sarukuma].

Today I’m introducing a charming bakery located in Tomiai-machi, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City:
[Bäckerei Glück].

Driving along Route 3 toward Uto, you’ll spot this adorable little shop on your left. The Bäckerei Glück parking lot has space for over 10 cars, so it’s easy to pull in.Step inside and you’ll be greeted by mountains of freshly baked bread! From here you can peek into the kitchen — my kids are fascinated every single visit!

Watching the bakers at work like this is a rare treat. When fresh bread comes out of the oven, the aroma is absolutely heavenly.I wonder what they’re making here?

If your timing is right, you might catch one of these special moments!

Who knows — your kids might even be inspired to become bakers someday! The sandwich selection is wonderfully extensive too!

My personal go-to is the tandoori chicken sandwich — the honey mustard sauce pairs perfectly with the spiced chicken.Don’t leave Bäckerei Glück without trying their #1 best-seller — “Shiroboshi” (White Star)! The name itself sounds lucky, doesn’t it?
It’s a star-shaped hard-style bread loaded with white chocolate and macadamia nuts.
(Bonus: 10% of January 2024 Shiroboshi sales were donated to the Noto Peninsula earthquake relief fund.)

The refrigerated section holds cranberry cream cheese sandwiches (another favorite of mine!), fresh chocolate treats, and even small deli items!

You’ll also find jams, rusks, cookies, and other baked goodies — perfect souvenirs to take home.On this visit, they even had local Bankan citrus on display! ¥100 is a steal!

Why We Recommend Bäckerei Glück

Bäckerei Glück features a cozy raised-floor seating area with sofas — a wonderful touch for families with kids!

By the window, beloved Anpanman characters (the famous Japanese “bread superhero”) gather together.
A perfect mascot for a bakery, right? There are cushions, blankets, picture books, and toys, so the kids can play while you enjoy your bread in peace. They also offer a drink menu and French toast, so you can pair them with your bread. My daughter picked these to be warmed up.

Chunky Lotus Root Curry Bread — ¥200

Three-Variety Sweet Potato Anpan — ¥220

Grape & Cream Cheese — ¥170

Each one is delicious on its own, but…

What I recommend most of all is the Glück Special Bread Platter (Hors d’oeuvre) — I’m absolutely in love with it!Just look at it! It’s a literal jewelry box of bread.
For picnics or home parties, you can custom-order your favorite breads to be arranged in this stunning platter. The kids’ bread box is also a huge hit — bite-sized and easy to eat (box fee is separate).Sandwich and burger platters are priced as shown above.

With cherry blossom (hanami) season approaching, this is a must-check spot for your picnic plans!Outside the shop you’ll find table seating and a vending machine.
In addition to the raised seating, there are 2 regular tables and 2 children’s chairs available.Beautiful Shodai-yaki pottery (a traditional Kumamoto craft) is also displayed. The restroom is located next to the cash register. The washbasin area is delightfully cute too.Bäckerei Glück also has a café menu — on sunny days, why not enjoy soft-serve ice cream out on the terrace?

In summer, you can savor shaved ice (kakigori), and they even host bread-making classes for elementary school kids!

Bäckerei Glück has now entered its 10th year!
A 9th anniversary appreciation festival is scheduled for February 23rd, 24th, and 25th — definitely worth checking out!
