Welcome to Haniwa Animal Zoo

Hello there!
This is Asukarando, your SaruKuma writer.

Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to a truly unique spot located in
Iwabaru, Kaou-machi, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Haniwa Animal Zoo”!

Tucked away among ancient burial mounds (kofun), this fascinating historical site features adorable haniwa clay figures that you can actually interact with. Let me show you around! (⌒0⌒)/~~

Convenient parking is available at the adjacent Kumamoto Prefectural Decorated Tomb Museum (Soushoku Kofunkan). (^^)

The restrooms are located at the back of the park. (^^)

Hand-washing facilities are conveniently placed right next to the restrooms. (^^)

There are benches scattered throughout the park (^з^)-☆
Since seating is limited, I’d recommend bringing a picnic blanket for extra comfort. (^^)

With plenty of trees on site, there’s no shortage of shaded spots to relax under. (^-^)/

The park is dotted with several ancient burial mounds, surrounded by wide-open grassy fields. (^^)
Kids can run around to their heart’s content!

You can even climb on top of the kofun mounds! \(^o^)/

What Makes Haniwa Animal Zoo Special

The very first time I visited, I was completely amazed by the magical scene before me!

So many haniwa figures gathered together — it’s quite a sight! (((・・;)

Quick culture note: “Haniwa” are ancient Japanese terracotta clay figures from the Kofun period (3rd–6th century), traditionally placed around burial mounds.

And here’s the best part — kids can actually touch them and even climb on them!

You’ll find haniwa in all sorts of fun shapes and designs. (^-^)/

First up — the classic, iconic haniwa!

Here’s a haniwa shaped like a bird! (^-^)/

And this one looks like a horse! With so many varieties, it’s a fun guessing game with kids — what animal is that one? \(^o^)/

There are also swings to enjoy! (^o^)/

No matter where you go, swings are always a kid favorite! (^з^)-☆

There’s a jungle gym, too! (*^^*)

Surrounded by lush nature, this park is also perfect for insect hunting! (^з^)-☆
You can spot all kinds of insects here — beetles, stag beetles, butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and more. ☆

A historic site where you can actually play among haniwa figures — the “Haniwa Animal Zoo” really is something special! (⌒0⌒)/~~
