HALE CAFE Tsunagu in Namikizaka, Kumamoto: A Stylish Cafe Perfect for Family Lunches & Gatherings
2024.11.30

Welcome to HALE CAFE Tsunagu
Hello travelers! This is Aikero, writer for SaruKuma, your guide to the best of Kumamoto.
Today I’m excited to introduce you to a charming spot tucked away in Minamitsuboi-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
HALE CAFE Tsunagu.
Have you ever struggled to find a kid-friendly lunch spot in the city center while traveling with little ones?
I used to default to food courts or casual udon shops because I just didn’t know where else to go.
But wouldn’t it be lovely to enjoy lunch in a stylish cafe instead?
Well, I found the perfect place!
It’s wonderful for family lunches, mom meet-ups, or even a relaxed date (^o^)
It’s quite popular, so I highly recommend making a reservation before your visit.
You can book by phone or even via DM through HALE CAFE Tsunagu’s Instagram account.
The neighborhood is also home to other fantastic dining spots like The. Chuka Meshi (authentic Chinese), Pizzeria da Rocco (Italian), Neu (cafe & bar), and Yakiniku Sakuraya (grilled meat).

These are all worth checking out during your Kumamoto adventure!
HALE CAFE Tsunagu is located along Namikizaka, a charming street that’s part of Kumamoto’s vibrant downtown.
Walk through the Kamitori shopping arcade and continue toward Namikizaka.
When you spot the Kachi-shoji alley sign in the photo, turn right.
The building entrance is just on your left after the turn.
HALE CAFE Tsunagu is on the 2nd floor, and the good news is there’s an elevator!
You’ll find the elevator on the right side toward the back of the building.
A stroller can fit, though space is a bit tight, so probably one at a time.
Wheelchairs and double strollers should also fit, just barely!
Step out of the elevator on the 2nd floor and the entrance to HALE CAFE Tsunagu is right there waiting for you.
Counter seats face the open kitchen,
and there’s a large screen plus plenty of table seating!
The table area is one step down, but they have a thoughtful ramp.
This is incredibly helpful for wheelchair users and families with strollers!
The interior is decorated with cute dried flowers and features a lovely wood-toned aesthetic that many will fall in love with.
When dining out, the atmosphere matters as much as the food, right?
The seats are well-spaced, so as you can see in the photo, you can pull a stroller right up to your table without feeling cramped.

For families, I especially recommend the raised tatami-style seating!
Can you picture moms and their little ones enjoying lunch together here?
Just one note: the platform is elevated, so keep an eye on your kids!
During my visit, a baby massage event was happening, and the cafe was filled with adorable babies. Such a heartwarming scene!
All ordering is done via tablet, which is great for international visitors.
・Weekday Lunch Plate (with soup) – ¥1,000 (Mon-Fri only)
The menu changes daily, so feel free to ask the staff what’s on offer.
・Pasta (various) – ¥1,200
・Pizza (various) – ¥1,200
My top recommendation is this:
・Select Lunch – ¥1,300
You pick 2 mains, plus your choice of rice, soup, and salad – fully customizable!
Choose your rice from white rice, fifteen-grain rice, or shiso-hijiki rice.
The healthier options come at no extra cost – love that!
For soup, pick from mushroom miso, egg soup, or sweet potato soy milk soup.
Again, no upcharge for any choice!
Salad dressings include Caesar, sesame, or Japanese-style.
A small but delightful detail!
And the best part: you can pick TWO main dishes!
Options include cold mapo eggplant, hand-kneaded hamburger steak, Japanese-style fried chicken (karaage), chicken nanban with special tartar sauce, tender menchi-katsu, pumpkin croquette, herb-baked white fish, sauteed bacon and mushrooms, chicken piccata, teriyaki-mayo chicken, and more!
Even though you get to choose two, the decision was incredibly tough!
HALE CAFE Tsunagu Recommended Menu
Here’s the Select Lunch I went with:
Karaage (Japanese fried chicken), pumpkin croquette, sweet potato soy milk soup, fifteen-grain rice, and Caesar salad.
My son is absolutely obsessed with karaage!
I thought the portions might be small since you get two mains, but the karaage came with three generous pieces!
Look at those impatient little hands!
The gentle, comforting soy milk soup with chunks of sweet potato was a hit.
The cafe even provides extra plates, spoons, and forks for sharing.
My son was happily stuffing his cheeks with sweet potato!
He wouldn’t get off my lap, and his hands kept reaching for everything!
The pumpkin croquette had a lovely natural sweetness, delicious even without sauce.
And finally, the star of the show: karaage!
My son kept signing that it was hot, but he just couldn’t stop eating it.
Crispy on the outside, perfectly seasoned, and so good with rice!
Even sharing with my son, we ended up completely full.
The cakes also looked amazing – definitely saving those for next time!
If you’ve been searching for a kid-friendly lunch spot in downtown Kumamoto – look no further!
Visit HALE CAFE Tsunagu in Namikizaka and treat yourself to a satisfying meal in a beautiful space.
The charming atmosphere also makes it a wonderful spot for a date (^o^)
