Introducing the Shop

Hello, fellow travelers!

Tonight’s dinner is going to be pumpkin gratin! Probably!
I’m Binako, writer for SaruKuma!

Today I’d like to introduce you to a wonderful little spot located in
Suya, Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefectureβ€”
“Suiyaan Kikunan”.

You’ll find it diagonally across from “Boulangerie Toi,” a bakery we’ve featured before.

You can park right in front of the shop,
and also near the staircase along the side.

The traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) here are all generously sized,
with prices starting from a budget-friendly 90 yen!

Strawberry Daifuku β€” 200 yen
Fresh, in-season strawberries wrapped in soft mochi for just 200 yen!
As a huge strawberry daifuku fan, I was thrilled.

Walnut Mochi β€” 90 yen
Soy sauce-flavored walnuts kneaded into chewy mochi.
This one looks absolutely irresistible.

Ikinari Dango β€” 100 yen
A Kumamoto specialty featuring smooth red bean paste (koshian)
and sweet potato sourced from Mashiki.

They also offer Amazake Manju (sweet sake-flavored buns).
In addition to chunky red bean (red) and smooth red bean (white) versions,
there’s also Roasted Sweet Potato Manju β€” 80 yen.
A bun that tastes like sweet potato pie? Now I’m intrigued!

Recommended Menu Items

This time I picked up:
Strawberry Daifuku β€” 200 yen
Mitarashi Dango β€” 90 yen

Oh wow~
This looks absolutely amazing!

The strawberry packed inside is simply magnificent!

That irresistible stretchy mochi gets me every time.
The sweetness of the red bean paste paired with the sweet-tart strawberry
completely fills my heart with joy.

The amount of red bean paste is just right,
and everything blends together beautifully in your mouth.

Next, I tried the mitarashi dango.

The aroma is incredibly toasty and fragrant!

Wait β€” this is INCREDIBLE!!!
I’ve never tasted mitarashi quite like this before.
It’s not just sweet β€” there’s a beautiful toasted aroma that fills your mouth,
making it absolutely delicious.
This is shockingly good.
