Hello, fellow travelers!

It’s Binako,
your SaruKuma writer who can’t stop talking to herself!

Today I’m excited to introduce you to
“Pan Koubou Olive”,
a lovely little bakery located in Naka, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

You’ll spot it right along the road, marked by its distinctive green lettering on the signboard.

The constant flow of customers tells you everything—this is a beloved neighborhood bakery that locals truly cherish.

I actually had to make a U-turn after spotting their sign! (laughs)
There’s something charmingly nostalgic about it that I just couldn’t resist.

Convenient parking is available right next to the shop, so it’s an easy stop for travelers exploring the area.

The interior is small and cozy,
but the warm, relaxing atmosphere makes you feel right at home.

It’s the kind of place where you can imagine many regulars come back not just for the bread, but for the comforting vibe itself.

You’ll find a wonderful selection ranging from savory bread (sōzai pan) to sweet bread (kashi pan) and freshly baked shokupan (Japanese milk bread).
The mentaiko (spicy cod roe) French bread and curry pan (curry-filled bread) are local favorites!
The shokupan is so beloved that some fans say they won’t buy it anywhere else!

Recommended Menu Items

This time, I tried the
Bagel — 130 yen

A perfectly round, full-moon-shaped bagel that looks almost too cute to eat.

The dough is soft and fluffy with a wonderfully simple flavor.
It’s that kind of simplicity that makes it absolutely delicious.

You can really savor the natural taste of the dough itself—a bagel meant to be enjoyed slowly and mindfully.

Toasting or warming it up would surely bring out yet another layer of flavor!

I also picked up the
Choco Cornet — 150 yen

You’d be surprised how few bakeries actually sell choco cornet (a Japanese spiral-shaped pastry filled with chocolate cream)…
So I was thrilled to find them here!

Loaded with chocolate.
Seriously rich and chocolatey—a must-try for any chocolate lover.
The spiral cornet shape is beautifully crafted, and the dough is wonderfully fluffy.

This is a decadent choco cornet made for true chocolate fans.
Definitely pair it with their light, fluffy bread for the perfect treat.

The gentle, comforting feel here isn’t just in the atmosphere—it’s in every bite!
Do make a stop here when you’re traveling through Yamaga!
