A SaruKuma writer visits Kazusaya in Minami-Kawashiri, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City, and shares an honest on-the-ground report. Prices start from 180 yen. Family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours are all covered below.

Hello everyone, hope you’re having a great day! 😊
This is Yuzu, your SaruKuma writer 🌻

Today I’m excited to introduce you to
Kazusaya, a charming little shop tucked away in Kawashiri, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City β˜†

This delightful shop combines two specialties under one roof:
Kashi Kobo Kazusaya (a traditional Japanese sweets workshop) and Pan Kobo kazusaya (an artisan bakery), which reopened together as a renewed shop in December 2019 πŸ˜ƒ

There’s a parking lot right in front of the shop with space for 4 cars πŸš—
Now, let’s head inside! Here we go!!!!

Right at the entrance, there’s hand sanitizer along with disposable gloves available for customers πŸ‘Œ

Feel free to use them if you’d like πŸ‘

Since this is a traditional wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop, the display cases are filled with beautifully crafted Japanese confections πŸ˜„

Their dorayaki (sweet pancake sandwiches with red bean filling) are especially popular! πŸ‘

You’ll find an amazing variety of dorayaki on display.

The sweet potato dorayaki is a special autumn-only seasonal item πŸ₯°

Autumn in Japan is truly a season of delicious treats β€” what a wonderful time to visit! ❀️

They also offer monaka (crispy wafer sweets filled with red bean paste) πŸ˜ƒ

Including chestnut-loaded dorayaki and chestnut anko ohagi (sticky rice balls)

They look incredible!
As I’m writing this, I’m thinking, “There’s no way these don’t taste amazingly of chestnut!!” πŸ˜…

I’m definitely buying these next time! πŸ˜†

They even sell their own original eco-friendly tote bags!

And just as popular as the dorayaki are their
lemon cakes β€” also available here 😊

The lemon cakes had been on hiatus for a while, but they’re back in stock now! πŸ‘

And since this place also has a bakery section,
you’ll find a wonderful selection of breads 🍞

The classic anpan (sweet bun filled with red bean paste) is here, along with the An-Cheese (anko paired with cheese) β€” a creative Japanese-Western fusion πŸ˜„

And here you’ll find some truly unusual flavors:
Coffee Anpan and Peach Anpan πŸ’•

You won’t find these everywhere! 😍

Beyond the anpan varieties, there’s a wide assortment of other fresh-baked breads 🍞

Inside the shop, there’s even an open workshop where you can watch the magic happen.

Live dorayaki making in action?!

There’s no way these aren’t going to be amazing!!

I’ve never had a freshly-made dorayaki before, so I’d love to try one! πŸ˜†

Just keep in mind that the live demonstration isn’t available all the time, so if you really want to taste a fresh-off-the-griddle dorayaki, it’s a good idea to call ahead and check before you visit πŸ‘Œ

Even the money tray at the register has the shop name on it β€” such a cute touch that I couldn’t resist snapping a photo! πŸ’•

Recommended Menu Items

This time, I tried:

From left to right:

Peach Anpan β€” 180 yen

Classic Anpan β€” 160 yen

Starting with the classic anpan:

Oh my goodness, this is incredibly delicious!!

As expected from a wagashi shop!
The anko (red bean paste) is absolutely heavenly πŸ’•
And the bread itself is wonderfully soft and tasty too 😍

As an anpan lover, I devoured it in seconds! πŸ˜…

Next up:

Peach Anpan

It was my first time ever seeing a peach anpan! πŸ˜†
This special version is filled with white bean paste mixed with peach peel β˜†

When I took a bite, I could really taste and smell the fresh peach flavor!!
It’s a limited-edition seasonal item available only until the cooler weather sets in!

And there’s also a coffee anpan on the menu too πŸ₯°

So, fellow travelers, why not stop by and try not just the classic anpan but also one of these uniquely flavored versions?

And of course, the other breads and traditional Japanese sweets are absolutely delicious too β€” guaranteed!!
