Today we’re introducing a beloved bento shop located in the Kuhonji area of Kumamoto City called “Kintaro.”

This bento shop has been around for quite a long time, and we hear that the second-generation owner has now taken over the business, carrying on the family tradition of homestyle Japanese cooking.

The shop’s signature dish, the Kintaro Bento, comes highly recommended by the owners themselves.

This bento has a truly unique form you won’t find anywhere else: side dishes piled on top of side dishes! It’s a sight you really have to see to believe. And here’s the kicker — all this volume comes at just 400 yen. Absolutely incredible value for hungry travelers exploring Kumamoto!

Personally, I also highly recommend the Chicken Nanban Bento! It features chicken in a spicy, crispy coating topped with creamy tartar sauce, served alongside almost the same generous selection of side dishes. This one is equally packed with hearty portions that will keep you fueled for sightseeing.

Access

The shop is located just one alley off the main road from the Yume Mart in Kuhonji! It’s pretty easy to find, and there’s space for about two cars to park right in front while you wait, so driving there is no problem at all.
