About Tsutsumiya Kumamoto Mashiki

Hello, I’m Gussan, a writer for [SaruKuma].

I heard a wonderful new dango (Japanese rice dumpling) shop had opened in the Mashiki area, perfect for picking up souvenirs, so I had to check it out.
Today I’m introducing a shop located in Soryo, Mashiki Town, Kamimashiki District:
[Tsutsumiya Kumamoto Mashiki].

A quick online search reveals that [Tsutsumiya] is a famous dango chain with around 20 shops across the Tohoku region, headquartered in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture.
So why has this beloved Tohoku-only dango leapt across so many prefectures to reach Kumamoto? And why specifically Mashiki?
Lots of curious questions came to mind, but I forgot to ask all of them, so even if you read to the end, the mystery remains a mystery. (Get it together, me!)
Thanks to the summer heat melting my brain, I now have homework for next time. Ha!

Anyway, let’s head over!♪
[Tsutsumiya Kumamoto Mashiki] is located in one corner of «Box Park Mashikirari».
This recently opened complex, combining colorful container houses with a two-story steel-frame building, has become a buzzy new hub of activity for Mashiki Town.
«Box Park Mashikirari» currently houses a bakery, a barbershop, a pet salon, and more, with additional shops opening on a rolling basis.
The lineup is already wonderfully varied, and it’s exciting to imagine what other shops will open in the future!
If you’re driving, there’s a shared parking lot for «Box Park Mashikirari» that you can use.
[Tsutsumiya Kumamoto Mashiki] is in the very first container house at the entrance of «Box Park Mashikirari».
Just look for the giant photo of dango, it’s hard to miss.
As the photo shows, [Tsutsumiya Kumamoto Mashiki] is famous for slathering its dango with generous, lavish amounts of sweet bean paste (anko).Step inside, choose your favorite dango, and place your order at the counter.
After paying, you’ll receive a numbered ticket and wait for your order to be prepared.
There’s a bench-style seat in front of the register where you can relax while you wait.
Inside the shop, rows of dango are lined up, each thickly coated with delicious-looking toppings.
Dango varieties include:
Walnut (Kurumi): 140 yen
Zunda (sweet edamame): 140 yen
Anko (sweet red bean): 140 yen
Sesame (Goma): 140 yen
Soy sauce (Shoyu): 140 yen
Peanut (Pinattsu): 140 yen
Matcha (seasonal): 170 yen
They also offer Tsutsumi-age (fried dango): 120 yen each (1,200 yen for a pack of 10),
and cold tea: 220 yen.
Dango and tea, a perfect pairing!
Kamairicha (pan-roasted green tea): 1,000 yen.
It would make a wonderful gift bundled with a set of dango, and as luck would have it…
…there are also gift sets of dango available.
Kotobuki (16 sticks): 2,340 yen
Matsu (6 sticks): 895 yen
Take (4 sticks): 605 yen

Recommended Menu Items at Tsutsumiya Kumamoto Mashiki

Your purchase comes wrapped in this charming, retro-style paper.

This time, I picked up walnut, peanut, and mitarashi (sweet soy glaze).
Up close, they’re far more substantial than they appear in the shop display.
Each one is heaped so generously with topping that it almost spills off the dango itself, what a treat!
The first bite… mmm! Soft, chewy, and pillowy!
Even though each dango is generously sized, the sweetness is balanced and never overwhelming, so they’re easy to eat and incredibly satisfying.
I’ve found yet another go-to souvenir option.
By the way, the dango should be stored in the refrigerator.
They don’t harden when chilled, so you can stock up safely even in the heat of summer.
