Discover VIDA RICA: A Slice of Costa Rica in Kumamoto
Hello, fellow travelers! It’s Kurubushi from Sarukuma, your local guide to hidden gems in Kumamoto.
Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to VIDA RICA, a charming little cafe tucked away in Miyuki Fueda, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City.
VIDA RICA is a true coffee lover’s paradise — run by a friendly owner from Costa Rica who hand-grinds Costa Rican beans for every single order and brews each cup using the pour-over method.

To get there, turn off Route 57 at the Distribution Industrial Park entrance heading toward Jonan, then turn at the 7-Eleven corner toward Miyuki Hospital.
Drive on a bit, pass the hospital and post office, and you’ll find a small cluster of shops sharing a parking lot with about 15 spaces.
VIDA RICA sits at the very back on the right side.

Heads up — it’s easy to miss if you’re driving fast, so keep your eyes peeled!

Two doors down you’ll spot Pizza House Cocco, another local favorite Sarukuma has covered before.

You can also use the eye-catching unmanned produce stand sign and vending machines as landmarks. (Trust me, you can’t miss those!)

While the lot has plenty of parking, it’s shared with neighboring shops — please stick to the two spots directly in front of VIDA RICA.

The outdoor menu is entirely in English — perfect for international visitors!

And don’t worry — there’s also a Japanese-language menu inside, so locals and travelers alike can order with ease.

The name VIDA RICA means “rich life” in Spanish — and the cozy interior absolutely lives up to the name.

Lush green plants fill the space, creating a calming, tropical atmosphere.

Look closely among the leaves and you’ll spot a hidden sloth!
Meet Tico — the official mascot of the Embassy of Costa Rica. How adorable is that?
And here’s the best part: you can order in Japanese, English, OR Spanish. Take your pick!

My mom — a delightfully energetic senior — placed her order in her own brand of Japanese-flavored English, and Roland, the owner, listened patiently and responded with genuine kindness. Not a single chuckle. What a gentleman!
Fun fact: Roland, who hails from Costa Rica, used to work as an English teacher!
He’s incredibly friendly and laid-back, so if your kids are learning English (or you simply want to practice), this is a wonderful spot to give it a try in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

He even asked us which color straw and which sticker we wanted — these little personal touches turn an ordinary coffee run into a memorable moment.

VIDA RICA is mainly takeout, but there’s also a small terrace — grab a seat if it’s free and enjoy your coffee in the open air. Even though it’s roadside, the patio is screened off, so it feels surprisingly tucked away and peaceful.
VIDA RICA’s Must-Try Menu

Let’s start with the star of the show — the coffee, of course!
Up first: Hand-Drip Iced Coffee, 500 yen.

Above are the espresso beans, freshly imported from Costa Rica.
Roland grinds the beans on the spot for every order and tailors the strength exactly to your liking — bold and rich, or smooth and mellow. Just ask!

The aroma alone, even before brewing, is heavenly.
The iced coffee turned out incredibly fruity and easy to drink — exactly the kind of refreshing pick-me-up you’ll crave on a hot Kumamoto summer day.

Strawberry Banana Smoothie, 600 yen
This is a coffee-free smoothie made with fresh fruit and milk.
The natural fruit sweetness makes it an absolute kid-pleaser.
The portion is generous, too — easily filling enough to count as a snack.
And now… drumroll please!
I know, I know — it’s a coffee shop. But I have to tell you:
the sweets here are absolutely incredible.
Every dessert is based on recipes Roland learned from his mother back in Costa Rica — true taste-of-home flavors.

Banana Bread, 350 yen
That classic banana bread you’ve seen in Western movies and cartoons? It’s right here.

I’ve been wanting to try the real deal forever.
The moist, tender crumb paired with the crunchy cookie-style topping is pure magic.
Wow. Just… wow.

Cheesecake, 350 yen
A rich, dense, baked-style cheesecake — exactly the kind I dream about.
YES! THIS! That decadent, creamy texture! Pure bliss!
One bite and I literally couldn’t help blurting out “sooo gooood” out loud.
While I was visiting, customers actually came in just to buy the cheesecake — and honestly? I get it. It’s the kind of treat you’d happily bring home as a gift.
They were sold out the day I visited, but the chocolate chunk cookies are also super soft and pair beautifully with the coffee — highly recommended on your next visit!

Other menu items include:
Hand-Drip Coffee (Hot/Iced) — 500 yen
Cafe Latte (Hot/Iced) — 550 yen
Caramel Latte (Hot/Iced) — 600 yen
Cafe Mocha (Hot/Iced) — 600 yen
Iced Strawberry Latte — 600 yen
Cold Brew — 400 yen
Mango Juice — 450 yen
Pineapple Juice — 450 yen
Matcha Latte (Hot/Iced) — 500 yen
Matcha Azuki Latte — 550 yen
Strawberry Yogurt Latte — 600 yen
Chocolate Milk — 600 yen

Hot Sandwich (Bacon & Cheese) — 500 yen
Cheesecake — 350 yen
Chocolate Chunk Cookie — 250 yen
Kids Menu (elementary school age and under)

If you find yourself exploring Minami Ward, do yourself a favor and stop by VIDA RICA. You won’t regret it!
Gracias!
