Introducing Sinbun-do Community Cafe
Hello there! It’s Kurubushi, your SaruKuma writer β彑
Today I’m taking you to a hidden gem in Obiyama, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
Sinbun-do Community Cafe

From National Route 57, turn at the Obiyama Junior High School intersection toward the Daiichi Shinyo Kinko (credit union) side.
Continue a little past Maxvalu Obiyama, and…

Look for the Smile Dental Clinic sign β that’s your landmark.

The cafe isn’t right on the main road,
but if you look closely, you’ll spot the shop sign on the building β it’s easy to find ^^

Parking is available right in front of the cafe (4 spaces),

plus around 8 more spaces in the gravel lot in the back (note: the two spots furthest at the back are not for the cafe, so please be careful).

The fence by the parking lot has the cafe’s schedule posted, which is super handy ^^

Step through the spacious entrance, slip off your shoes Japanese-style, and head inside.

The interior is far more spacious than the exterior suggests β a delightful surprise.
Inside you’ll find a Kumamoto-themed book corner,

plus a curated selection of staff picks,
so there’s always something interesting to dive into.

The kids dove right in the moment we walked through the door, picking up books and starting to read ^^
There are also board games and wooden building blocks, making it a fun shared space for everyone from toddlers to adults.

Order at the counter just inside the entrance.
It’s a one-order minimum system, and you can stay as long as you like.

The cafe has a rental kitchen too, and on days without a lunch service, you’re welcome to bring your own food!
And here’s a great one for dog lovers: the terrace seating is dog-friendly!
Just tie your pup to the lead hook near the entrance and pay in cash in advance.
(For details, see the “Bringing Your Dog” section on the official website.)

Around the counter you’ll find handmade crafts
and flyers for various events ^^
Each one is so charming you’ll want to pick them all up.

Free water is also available.

There’s even a baby crib inside, so families with napping infants can relax.

The restroom is clean and roomy.
A baby seat is provided, too.

And the nursing room offers plenty of space to settle in comfortably.
Why We Recommend Sinbun-do Community Cafe
These days, kids end up glued to TVs and video games β partly weather, partly just a lack of places to go.
But here’s the twist: at Sinbun-do, video games are not allowed.
Instead, you get to spend priceless time with the friends you came with β and with brand-new friends you’ll meet right there on the spot.

A board game my kids had never seen before.
Normally my older one says “It’s too hard for the little one” and refuses to play together (haha).
But this time, he took the lead, explained the rules, and played alongside his sibling.

I caught a glimpse of him chatting with new friends he’d just made while making kakigori together ^^

The nostalgic, old-school style of shaved ice is delightful.

On a hot summer day, that icy cool kakigori is exactly what kids crave ^^

Since it was still summer break when we visited, we managed to book the nagashi-somen (flowing noodles) experience on the terrace ^^ (this seasonal event has now ended).
The staff were incredibly kind, calling out playfully as they sent the noodles down the bamboo chute, and the kids were beside themselves with excitement.
By the end, the kids had grown so attached to the staff you’d think they were long-lost relatives βͺ

Mine are the type to wait by the strainer at the very end and grab the leftover noodles (haha).
Not the most competitive eaters, apparently (haha).
Slurping noodles with one hand and snagging more with the other (haha).
You can also bring your own food to send down the chute, so we added cherry tomatoes and muscat grapes to the mix ^^

This is the Mikan Squash.
The dried mandarin garnish on top is wonderfully crispy.
So refreshing β perfect for beating the summer heat.

And here is Imo Koganeiro’s chilled candied sweet potato topped with ice cream.
When the kids get hungry, sweet potato is always an easy yes ^^
Beyond the nagashi-somen, the cafe also runs creative seasonal events like a summer-vacation “Let’s Tackle Homework Together” gathering with light snacks included,
and since the space doubles as a rental room and rental kitchen,
there’s an event of some kind happening on almost every business day ^^
