About Karatachi Kodomoen

Hello, this is Aikero, a writer for Sarukuma!

Today I’m introducing a wonderful spot in Kawachi-machi, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City:
Karatachi Kodomoen.Fun fact — I’m actually a graduate of this very kindergarten! (^^)/
When I dropped by their summer Karatachi Festival, the staff said, “Come visit any time!” — so I promised to come back for an interview, and here we are! ♫

Speaking of Kawachi, have you read our half-day Mt. Kinpo plan? It’s an exciting outdoor experience for kids and grown-ups alike!

[Half-Day at Mt. Kinpo] Meet wild birds and enjoy lunch with the trout you caught yourself! ♫

Just a 3-minute drive from Karatachi Kodomoen, you’ll find Ariake Orange Park, where you can enjoy a BBQ with sea views.
With its playground equipment and foot bath, it’s another perfect family stop! ♫

[Ariake Orange Park — Kawachi-machi, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City] Rain or shine — how about BBQ with an ocean view?

When you spot the sign along Prefectural Route 101, turn there.
After about 50 meters you’ll come to a Y-junction with another sign — keep going straight, past the mandarin orchard.
Turn left at this next sign and you’ll reach the parking area.
There aren’t any painted lines, but the right side is reserved for the school’s bus, so please park elsewhere.
If you leave before 4 PM you can take the same route back, but during pickup time the exit route changes slightly.
Head to the back of the school building, on the opposite side from the parking entrance.

Turn left at the small shed on your right and ahead, and you’ll come back out at the Y-junction sign.
Make a right at the end and you’ll be back on the prefectural road. (^^)

It’s basically a loop around the school building.
No issue if you’re not visiting during drop-off or pick-up times — but a heads-up just in case!

Karatachi Kodomoen is packed with things to spark a child’s imagination! ♫
A tree house, a sand mountain — and beneath the tree house, a tiny “beetle room”!
A climber-friendly tree even has a tightrope-style rope strung up!
My son isn’t quite ready for it yet, but it makes you want to cheer kids on as they take on the challenge. ♫
As you may have noticed — almost everything here is handmade!

Here’s the secret: the principal of Karatachi Kodomoen is also the second “mayor” of Omoshiro Mura (“Fun Village”)!
Many Kumamoto families have ridden the Omoshiro Car or visited Omoshiro Mura. ♫
The Omoshiro Car travels around Kumamoto Prefecture, so be sure to try out their unique play experiences too! (^^)/
Over at the sandbox, kids were busy playing pretend kitchen.
The sloped slide is a great full-body workout — kids really have to use their muscles to climb up.
And yes, the principal built it himself! The terrace has monkey bars and a little art studio.
On sunny days, the kids apparently enjoy lunch out on the terrace too. ♪
Inside the classrooms there are plenty of little play corners, too.
Could one day even be enough to try everything? (●^o^●)

Why We Recommend Karatachi Kodomoen

Every Wednesday is “Art Time.”
Resident artist-in-residence “Yukari-chan” — copperplate engraver Yukari Maeda — visits to lead a creative session.

Both enrolled kids and visiting families are welcome to join in!
“On rainy days we get a big turnout, but I wonder if anyone will come on a sunny day like this…?” Yukari was saying — and right on cue, the kids came running over with shouts of “Yukari-chan!” ♫
The day’s theme was “working with cardboard.”
Some kids played with the boxes, while others worked quietly on their masterpieces.

It was my son’s first time using craft glue.
He was curious enough to touch it — then promptly wiped it off on me. (^_^;)
He’s still a bit young for this kind of thing, but kids get a chance to enjoy real, hands-on art here, so timing your visit for an Art Day is highly recommended! ♪The kids invited us into their finished cardboard houses — some even had proper roofs!
When I followed an older girl in, I discovered a pretend-kitchen play setup inside.
That hidden-clubhouse vibe is just irresistible. ♪
A marimba mounted on the fence!
My son is in his “hit everything” phase, so this was perfect for him!A drum set built from buckets, washtubs, pots, and frying pans!
Each surface makes a different sound — and my son was banging away happily. (●^o^●)Beneath the big climbing structure there’s another little nook.
It even has a working tap, so kids can really get into pretend cooking.
My son just wanted to keep banging things — there’s something to catch his eye everywhere we turn! ♫
He taste-tested some pebbles, then popped them in a bowl and “microwaved” them.
What exactly was he cooking up?
I’m pretty sure this thing has been here since I was a kid! ?
Kids roll it around, climb inside — basically use it however they want.
Honestly, you can’t get this much non-stop play even at most public parks!
Large parks tire parents out, but here you can simply watch from inside a contained yard. ♫
He’s at that age where he just has to climb into any hole he sees.
Hey — I used to play on this slide too! Talk about nostalgic! (#^.^#)

At Karatachi Kodomoen, visitors mix in with the regular students.
Because they practice mixed-age care, the children welcomed my son right in like he’d always been there.
The oldest ones called out, “Hey, baby! Over here!” and pulled him into a game of tag. After a full morning of outdoor play, it’s time for the lunch we’ve all been waiting for!

Just ¥500 for a parent and child meal — seriously?
You’ll absolutely want to stay for lunch! (●^o^●)
(There’s hardly anywhere else to eat nearby — only a Joyfull-style family restaurant about 10 minutes toward Tamana.)

That day’s menu was:
• Stir-fried pork and vegetables, Chinese-style
• Sweet simmered kabocha pumpkin
• Clear onion soup
• Tsukudani made from leftover dashi flakes
• White rice

It was all so good — I’m 100% getting lunch again next time!
My son loved the soup so much he polished off mine too. (^_^;)
The enrolled kids were lining up for seconds! ♫The chairs? Yep, those are also handmade by the principal! (●^o^●)
A nature-rich kindergarten with handmade play equipment that gets kids really moving.
Art experiences you simply can’t replicate at home or at the local park.
Why not bring your little one to the warm, easygoing atmosphere of Karatachi Kodomoen?

Don’t know anyone in town? Craving some adult conversation? Find groups overwhelming? Feeling worn out from being one-on-one with your child? Got a pint-sized energizer bunny? Whatever your situation — or lack of one — they welcome everyone with open arms. ♫
Next time, I’m bringing my older daughter (an elementary schooler) along too! (^^)
