Welcome to Ariake Orange Garden

Hello, travelers! I’m Aikero, a writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m excited to introduce you to a hidden gem in Kawachi-machi, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City
Ariake Orange Garden (Ariake Orenji-en).
Fun fact — Kawachi happens to be my hometown! But personal bias aside, this charming area is blessed with the Ariake Sea on one side and lush mandarin orange groves on the other. It’s not just a pass-through town between central Kumamoto and Tamana — it’s a destination of its own!

I have fond childhood memories of swimming at a nearby pool and then walking over to Ariake Orange Garden for shaved ice afterward.
This place has long been a beloved gathering spot for the children of Kawachi.
While they’re famous for mandarin picking and grape sales, today I’m here to tell you about their fantastic BBQ experience!Park here, right in front of the sea!
If you have small children, please keep a close eye on them when getting in and out of the car.
There’s also additional parking available right under the grape trellis inside Ariake Orange Garden.
Inside, you’ll find lovely handmade crafts for sale!
There are also wonderful local souvenirs like furikake rice seasoning made with Kawachi-grown nori seaweed and crispy mandarin orange karinto sweets — perfect for taking home! They even stock dagashi (traditional Japanese penny candy) — my daughter was already eyeing them up, trying to decide what to buy! Now, here’s a slope to climb!
It’s a fairly steep walk up, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.

We pushed our stroller up the hill (well, my husband did!), but the staff kindly offered to drive us up — so if you’re worried about the climb, just ask at the front. They’re incredibly accommodating! Here’s the view partway up the hill!
A delightfully nostalgic, rural port town spreads out below.
After the climb, you’ll be rewarded with the BBQ area at the top of the hill!
Surrounded by trees with plenty of natural shade, the sea breeze keeps things refreshingly cool.
Just look at this view!
The weather wasn’t perfect during our visit, but on clear days and at sunset, you can enjoy gorgeous skies and breathtaking sunsets!
How often do you get to BBQ with a view like this?

There’s also a lighthouse and a shrine nearby — plenty to explore!

“Oh no, I made a reservation but it’s going to rain!”
No worries! On rainy days, you can BBQ inside their covered hut!

Outdoor reservations always come with weather anxiety, right? We visited during the rainy season and were watching the forecast nervously, but the staff set us up under the covered hut so we could relax and enjoy ourselves.
Luckily the rain held off, and they opened up the vinyl sides of the hut so the breeze could flow through — wonderfully cool and pleasant!Kids who’d rather play than eat? They’ll love this place too!
There’s a shoes-off kids’ play space!
These little touches mean so much to families with kids!
If you’re traveling with a baby, even something as simple as being able to get hot water is a huge help. And there’s more!
There are also play structures that double as core training equipment!
With mini slides, swings, and tricycles, kids up to about lower elementary school age will have a blast. The crowning touch — a foot bath!
It’s hard to tell from the photo, but it’s actually shaped like a boat!
With kids and water mixing, while they do provide foot mats, you might want to bring a change of clothes and a towel just in case.Restrooms are located both partway up the slope and at the top.
Both Japanese-style and Western-style toilets are available.

Recommended Menu at Ariake Orange Garden

For our visit, we ordered
2 Gourmet Sets, 1 Sea Set, and 2 Mountain Sets — a total of 5 servings.
(The onigiri rice balls and squid aren’t pictured here.)

The fish of the day was isaki (chicken grunt)!
Can you almost smell the delicious aromas and hear the sizzle?
The staff prepares the charcoal fire for you, so you can just show up and enjoy — so easy! Those golden-brown grill marks are seriously appetizing! The drinks menu had something for everyone — shochu, cold sake, draft beer, canned beer, canned chu-hi, non-alcoholic drinks, juice, tea, and more!
You can also bring your own drinks for a 500 yen per person fee.
Our little fish-loving boy?
Despite saying “hot, hot!” he polished off his fish in no time!

“Here’s something for the kids!”
The staff brought over marshmallows for the children — such a sweet gesture!
After eating our fill and playing, we headed back down the hill for some kakigori (Japanese shaved ice)!
It’s wonderful — this nostalgic place hasn’t changed a bit.
I’m so glad I could come back to this special spot from my childhood with my own kids now.
Summer is just around the corner!
If you’re looking for an unforgettable BBQ experience with sea views, ocean breezes, and cooling tree shade, Ariake Orange Garden is the place to be!
