A Sarukuma writer visits TOIRO BAKERY in Ozu Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto. Prices start from ¥230. We’ve also gathered family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
Welcome to TOIRO BAKERY
Hello travelers, this is Mido, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to TOIRO BAKERY, a charming little bread shop tucked away in Ozu Town, Kikuchi District, just outside Kumamoto City.
Newly opened on December 1, 2023, this bakery serves up everything from savory meal-style breads to sweet pastries — all crafted with real care and attention to detail.

Look for the bright blue roof — you can’t miss it.
TOIRO BAKERY sits near Ozu Central Park, right along Route 57. If you’re driving, it’s directly across the street from the Daiso Kumamoto Ozu store. Look for the row of colorful banners flapping out front!
Parking is available right in front of the shop — super convenient for road-trippers.
When I arrived around 10:20 AM, customers were already streaming in!
A standing chalkboard out front shows the day’s most popular picks. ♪

Stepping inside, you’ll find breads displayed in the center of the shop and along the walls — a delicious 360-degree view of fresh baking.
Front and center is the star of the show — the same crowd-pleaser advertised on the chalkboard outside.
“Lemon Glaze Croissant” — ¥230
Right beside it, you’ll spot a traditional pastry from the Brittany region of France:
“Kouign-amann” — ¥250
This happens to be one of my personal favorites! I’m always on the hunt for it whenever I visit a new bakery.
Next to the register sits the bakery’s “Luxury Shokupan” (Japanese-style milk bread):
1 loaf — ¥450, 2 loaves (1 full bar) — ¥800
It’s blended with fresh cream, condensed milk, and honey — pure indulgence in bread form. Perfect for a relaxed weekend breakfast.
“Kuro-wassan” (Black Croissant) — ¥200
“Ring Donut – Milk Chocolate” — ¥200
“Ring Donut – Strawberry” — ¥200
“Ring Donut – Caramel” — ¥200
“Ring Donut – White” — ¥200
These donuts are absolutely perfect as a snack for the kids!
“Salt Bread” — ¥200
“Baked Frankfurter Roll” — ¥180
The salt bread is made with premium Guérande sea salt from France.
“Winter Choco Cornet” — ¥190
“Choco Cornet” — ¥180
Two varieties of Japan’s beloved cone-shaped chocolate-cream pastry. Both look irresistible.
“Sausage Bread” — ¥200
“Curry Pan” (Curry Bread) — ¥230
These fried-style breads look incredible! The curry bread is mildly spiced — ideal even if you’re not a fan of heavy heat.
“French Bread (Furansu Pan)” — ¥250
*Available from around 11:00 AM.
“Bacon Épi” — ¥200
“Cheese Komekko” (Rice Flour Cheese Bread) — ¥180
*These two come out of the oven around 11:30 AM.
“Hakata Mentai France” (Spicy Cod Roe Baguette) — ¥280
“Garlic France” — ¥130
These two are baked fresh around 12:00 noon.
Honestly, every single item looked tempting! ☆彡
Beside the register, you’ll also find a selection of cup juices and packaged drinks!
For payments, PayPay is accepted, and the staff mentioned that other digital payment options will be added soon.
At the 10 AM opening, all the soft, non-hard-crust breads are lined up and ready to go. The crusty hard-style breads come out at the times listed above.
I went back another day, just after lunch, specifically targeting the Hakata Mentai France!
The hard-crust breads looked absolutely mouthwatering. ♪
That day they were also selling “Choco Melon Pan” and classic “Anpan” (sweet red bean bun)!
Good news for families: TOIRO BAKERY is stroller-friendly. The staff have thoughtfully designed the entrance so it’s easy to roll right in. (^^)/
TOIRO BAKERY — Recommended Picks
Here are the items I’d recommend trying first:
• Bestsellers: “Lemon Glaze Croissant” and “Hakata Mentai France”
• My personal favorite: “Kouign-amann”
• Kid-approved snacks: “Ring Donut – Milk Chocolate” and “Ring Donut – Strawberry”
First up, the “Lemon Glaze Croissant.”
The outside is coated in glittering sugar and topped with strips of lemon peel.
Look at that beautiful cross-section after I tore it in half!
The croissant is impossibly light and airy, with a refreshing zing from the lemon. The little pieces of lemon peel add the perfect bright accent. ♪
The “Kouign-amann.”
You can almost hear the crunch through the photo.
Crispy, flaky, caramelized — absolutely delicious!
It has a satisfyingly rich sweetness that pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee. ♪
Next up: “Ring Donut – Milk Chocolate” and “Ring Donut – Strawberry.”
“So cute! They look so yummy!” my daughter exclaimed, before taking a big bite.
They disappeared at lightning speed. (laughs)
My son also dove right in.
I snuck a bite myself — these donuts are wonderfully light, not heavy at all. ♪
You’ll polish one off in no time! ♪
And finally, the “Hakata Mentai France” (spicy cod roe baguette).
The creamy mentaiko (spicy pollock roe) topping is out of this world!
And that French bread base — wonderfully crusty and flavorful. ♪♪♪
No wonder it’s a bestseller!
One important note: at TOIRO BAKERY, breads are sold until they run out, so if there’s something you’re really craving, get there early. When items sell out, the bakery posts updates on Instagram.
Since the shop is just a stone’s throw from Ozu Central Park, it’s easy to combine your bakery run with a relaxing stroll or picnic.
(Fun fact: the park features a statue of “Zoro” from the One Piece anime, plus a statue of “Karaimo-kun,” Ozu Town’s adorable mascot character — great photo ops!)
Definitely worth adding to your Kumamoto itinerary! ♪
